Tomorrow At Yankee Stadium

I will be attending Old Timer’s Day at the Stadium tomorrow and because my phone is a piece of garbage, I won’t be able to post anything to the blog BUT I will be live tweeting the festivities at @StaceyGotsulias and if I get thrown into Twitter jail I will switch over to my secondary account @The_Stace.

I also plan on keeping track of all the action in my trusty notepad and I will type everything up when I get home later in the day. It will be all part of a new feature that we’re starting called “Scoring With Stacey.” Instead of using a traditional scorebook, I will just write everything down as it happens and add my silly comments. It should be interesting and I hope, a little funny.

Old Timer’s Day is my favorite day of the regular season – even more than Opening Day – so fun time should be had by one and all. And hopefully the Yanks can salvage a split against the White Sox.

HiroKKKKKKKKKKKi: Yankees 4 White Sox 0

Today’s performance by Hiroki Kuroda was just what Joe Girardi and the Yankee bullpen needed. It stopped a two-game skid, preserved some arms and also prevented the possibility of a White Sox series sweep. If the Yankees can win tomorrow’s series finale, they’ll salvage a split.

Kuroda was marvelous, tossing seven innings of three-hit, no run ball with a season – and career -high 11 strike outs and only surrendering one walk. He improved to 8-7 on the season.

David Robertson recovered nicely from his shaky performance on Thursday night. He struck out two in his inning of work. The bullpen – Robertson, Boone Logan and Rafael Soriano – kept the White Sox hitless in two innings of work.

The hitting stars of the game were Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano and Dewayne Wise who all hit home runs. Wise finished the day 3-3 with two RBI and Granderson’s jack was his 23rd of the season. Cano finished his torrid month of June by going 2-4 today.

Some awesome Robinson Cano facts:

  • From ESPN Stats & Info: Cano has now recorded an RBI in 10 straight games vs White Sox. That’s the longest such streak by a Yankee since Babe Ruth in 1931.
  • Today’s home run was his 11th this month.
  • He’s now batting .308 on the season. (Yeah, yeah, I know BA isn’t that important blah blah blah.) And yet, even more!
  • From YES Network’s research guy: Cano finishes June batting .340 (34-100), but he started the month 2 for 12, so he’s hitting .364 since June 5th.

I think it’s safe to say Cano will be the Yankee Player of the Month.

White Sox vs Yankees Status: Nightmarish

I’d put these last two games somewhere between Sandusky’s experience behind bars and Ann Curry’s getting booted off of “The Today Show.”  Honestly, we’re all better off that both of those things happened.  I’m sure Matt Lauer decided both of their fates because he’s friggin Matt Lauer.  “Where in the world is Matt Lauer?”  Short answer: BEHIND YOU.

Yesterday was very strange for Joe Girardi.  I had defended his managing style earlier in the day and had to eat crow today, as he made a baffling move in the 9th, not bringing Robertson in for the whole inning.  In the immortal words of DMX, Joe made me “lose my mind” and “act the fool, up in here, up in here.”  And I really scratched my head when Girardi said he planned on bringing in D-Rob at some point in the 9th, regardless. “I’m bringing him in with two outs.  There should be two outs.  I’m mixing and matching,” said Girardi.  He went on to say he was being careful, because it was his second day in a row.  Fair enough.  He’s coming back from injury, but if you’re going to throw him at all, I just think you give him the inning like my arrest record was when I was 12–clean.

Then there’s tonight. Bears 14-Giants 7.  I had the over.  Tonight’s game was a joke.  Adam Warren made his debut and took a beating, giving up 6 ER in 2.1 IP.  As of right now, he’s been sent back down and I’m pretty sure his parking wasn’t validated.  That is ice cold.

The Yanks can split this series, but it will be tough.  Peavy vs. Kuroda tomorrow and Floyd vs. Hughes on Sunday.  Deep down, I feel the split, but I’m always optimistic about this team.  Bad two games, but it could be worse.  That’s why I said ‘nightmarish.’  Even if they can’t get the split, Old-Timers’ Day is Sunday, so we win anyway.

Bye Bye Adam Warren. We Hardly Knew Ye.

Ugh: White Sox 14 Yankees 7

Well that was really ugly. It started off well with the Yankees taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then it all turned to crap.

Adam Warren didn’t do well.

Cory Wade was hung out to dry.

And Dewayne Wise can pitch! Who knew!

Yeah…

Oh wait! There was one good thing tonight. Derek Jeter is now 13th on the all-time hits list. He pulled ahead of Cal Ripken Jr. in that four-run first inning with a double.

Hooray!

Can We Just Forget That Game Happened?

Please?

Thanks.

My Thoughts On Andy Pettitte

Andy Pettitte will be out at least six weeks

“We’ve got to weather the storm. No one’s going to feel sorry for us. Time to put my pom-poms on and be a cheerleader.”

I honestly didn’t think Andy Pettitte’s injury was that bad when it first happened because I didn’t see it. I saw him fall to the ground but I had no idea why he did. Then someone told me he was hit with the ball and even then I still didn’t think it was bad.

The idea of a fracture didn’t enter my mind so when I saw the first tweets surface that said “fracture” and “out for at least six weeks” I cursed very loudly.

Then I became sick to my stomach and covered my mouth with my hand fearing I’d throw up all over the nice people sitting in the row in front of me.

The rest of the game wasn’t very fun for me. I found it hard to cheer knowing what had happened to Pettitte. And I kept checking Twitter to see if maybe I was imagining things.

How I Kept Score At Today’s Yankee Game

I brought a notepad with me to today’s Yankee game and forgot I had it until the fourth inning. So as a goof I took it out and this is what I wrote:

  • Ubaldo suddenly pitching well. Boo!
  • 1-0 Bot 4, A-Rod struck out swinging.
  • Cano single. Wee!
  • Tex K looking. Boo!
  • Ubaldo: 72 pitches, 34 BB, 38 K at the time of Chavez’s at bat
  • (In big letters) CHAVEZ 2R DOUBLE WOO!!!! 2-1
  • Top of the 5th Pettitte taken out after getting hit with a comebacker. NOOOOOO!
  • 4IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB and 7K
  • 1 out, 2nd and 3rd for the Indians – Boo.
  • Eppley out, Rapada in
  • 2 outs. Kotchman out at the plate – Wee.
  • Boo – 2-2 – single by Cabrera
  • 3-2 Indians BOO
  • Freddy Garcia in guess he’s not starting Friday
  • Yikes longest 5th inning ever
  • Strikeout to end the inning. Thank goodness.

I’m laughing so hard at myself. I think I may have to do this at every game from now on. Forget a scorebook and being serious. I’m just bringing a notepad, writing everything down and inserting my stupid comments.

Quick! Someone Put Boone Logan In Bubble Wrap!!

Andy :(

It was a bad day for guys who throw with their left arm as CC Sabathia was placed on the DL before today’s game and poor Andy Pettitte was hit in the leg with a comebacker, suffering a fracture which will keep him away from the team for at least six weeks.

WHAT THE HELL BASEBALL GODS?!

Of course this happens just when things were getting good for the Yankees.

They have been playing fantastic baseball for over a month and now they have lost 2/5′s of their starting rotation within a few hours of each other.

Ugh.

At least CC, for now, is only due to miss two starts but poor Andy Pettitte, what a bad break. (For lack of a better phrase)

I can’t even deal with this news. I was at the game and when I saw the news of Pettitte’s fracture on Twitter I actually almost threw up. I was so sick to my stomach. I almost felt as bad as I did when Mariano Rivera was lost for the season though I didn’t cry.

But at least the Yankees won the game and swept the series from the Indians – thank goodness Soriano didn’t blow the save, though it was iffy there for a few moments. And big props to Freddy Garcia who stepped up in a big way and won the game with a great performance  in relief.

More props to Robinson Cano for putting the Yankees ahead for good with a bomb to left field. I was getting my Johnny Rocket’s shake when he hit it and I missed it. MORE EVIL HOME RUNS!

It’s great that the Yankees have now won five in a row but I feel like we can’t even be happy right now because of what happened to Pettitte.

Oh and like I said in the title of this post, someone can watch over Boone Logan and make sure nothing happens to him? Thanks.
