The New Orleans Saints lost to the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon, 27-30. I know this is difficult for all of us, but most especially Rob Ryan. If you were watching this game, you saw a very disgusted-looking Ryan after Tom Brady threw the Patriots’ game-winning touchdown. If you didn’t see Ryan’s reaction, you no doubt will in countless gifs and NFL recaps to come.
Drew Brees threw for 236 yards, one INT, and two TDs. Rookie receiver Kenny Stills was the Saints’ leading rusher with 64 yards and a TD. Stills scored on a 34-yard pass. Brees’ second touchdown was a three-yard pass to Travaris Cadet. Rookie running back Khiry Robinson rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown. Jimmy Graham and Marques Colston were both remarkably quiet this game. Graham had no catches; Colston had 11 receiving yards.
Patriots QB Tom Brady threw for 269 yards and a TD. Stevan Ridley was the Patriots leading rusher with 96 yards and two TDs.
The Saints were up by four points late in the fourth quarter. With 1:13 on the clock, the Patriots needed a touchdown to win it. They went for broke, while the Saints defense played conservatively. Brady’s only touchdown of the game was a 17-yard pass to Kenbrell Thompkins for the Patriots win and a very distressed Rob Ryan.
Saints fans can take solace in the fact that New Orleans is firmly in control of the NFC South, even with the Panthers win over Minnesota. As long as this losing thing doesn’t become a habit, the Saints should be favored to take the division.
We’ll have to wait to weeks to see how the Saints rebound from this loss. New Orleans has a bye in Week 7. They host the Buffalo Bills in Week 8.
