Your Daily Cup: “A Question Of Respect”

After Sidney Crosby spoke with the media about his concussion, Jonathan Toews went on the record with his own opinion on hits to the head:

“Obviously with the rule changes you can debate there until you’re blue in the face,” said Toews. “I think you see the same situations come up over and over. A guy will be cutting across the middle and get hit from the blind side where they have no idea if the guy’s coming or not. I think that’s just a question of respect.

“Sometimes avoiding head injuries altogether are pretty much impossible but the big ones, the lasting ones, seem to be from those dangerous hits in the middle of the ice. Those are the ones players need to have a little more respect and put themselves in those shoes and be like, ‘You know what, if I do it to someone, it can easily happen to me.’ We have to protect each other in a certain way.”

In lighter news, Toews unwittingly taught a child to keep his head on a swivel.

After the jump, read some new news on some old teammates.

Your Daily Cup: Stalberg Wants It. He Wants It So Bad.

SO bad, you guys. (Photo: Bridget Samuels/flickr)

A spot on the top lines, that is. What did you think I mean?

“There are some spots in the top six and there are some spots in the bottom six,” said Stalberg, who along with teammates Marcus Kruger and Niklas Hjalmarsson helped paint the Indian head logo on the United Center ice Wednesday. “I’m going to do everything I can to take one of those (top spots). If I don’t, I know I can go back and play that more physical game too. It’s good for our team and good for my career that I can play a couple of different roles.”

Speaking of ice painting, the Blackhawks website posted three videos about this momentous occasion:

So close to the beginning of the season, yet so far.

Your Daily Cup: The Free Agent Frenzy News Round Up

We have some catching up to do when it comes to Blackhawks news (thanks to my little detour to the NHL Draft). So what better time to do so than tonight, on Free Agent Frenzy Eve?

The Dearly Departed

See ya later, guys. (Photos: Bridget Samuels/flickr)

The Blackhawks have said goodbye to three players — Brian Campbell, Tomas Kopecky, and Troy Brouwer.

Campbell has ended up in Florida with Dale Tallon and the Panthers. According to the Sun-Sentinel:

“I’ve had guys call me, guys I’ve played with before, saying, ‘Dude, you’re lucky, get me down there,”’ Campbell said on WQAM radio. “Dale said to me, ‘I’d like to bring you in to be the [pioneer], making this the place to be where everyone wants to play.’

“Obviously, with Dale there, I’ve had guys under contract and free agents say that to me … If it’s going to be a good situation guys want to be involved in it.”

Campbell played a similar role in the Blackhawks’ rebuilding — also thanks to Tallon. Let’s hope that it works out for the Panthers, as well. I always thought that Campbell never got a fair shake here in Chicago because of his inflated contract, but maybe his skills will be more appreciated down in South Beach since his contract is helping the Panthers make the cap floor.

Kopecky, too, has ended up on the Panthers. According to the Chicago Tribune, he was signed to a four-year contract worth $12 million. Wow, really? The Panthers really do need to make the floor, don’t they? (As of right now, they’re about $23 million below the floor, according to CapGeek. Jesus.)

Troy Brouwer, however, was dealt to the Washington Capitals in exchange for their first-round pick in this year’s draft. Though there was some controversy earlier this week when he claimed that Blackhawks players were “frustrated” by the recent moves, we still wish him the best of luck in Washington. He hopes to bring some leadership to the Caps, according to USA Today:

“Sometimes you need a little bit of outside views, just to come in and make sure that guys are doing what they need to do in important games,” Brouwer said. “There’s no boundary on leadership age. Whether you’re wearing a letter on a team, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re not a leader. I want to come in and help out with all the experience that I’ve had.”

The Capitals made him a qualifying offer on Monday.

Blackhawks Visit A Heart Transplant Patient

There’s no real news on the Blackhawks right now, so here’s a touching little video I just found on YouTube. Ryan Johnson and Jake Dowell surprise Eddie Snype, who is awaiting a heart transplant at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

It’s pretty simple.

Lose and the season is over.

Win and fly back to Vancouver to continue the fight for their playoff lives in Game 5.

Let’s be honest though, Chicago is 0-17 when down 0-3 in a series and only three teams in the history of the NHL have come back from 0-3 (nhl.com).

This is where the cliche one game at a time comes into play. Nothing else matters but winning this one game.

This is it.  Put up or shut up. Win or go home and stay home.

Just get this one.

INJURY REPORT

CHI: Forward Dave Bolland (concussion) is back in tonight, along with forwards Bryan Bickell and Ryan Johnson. Forward Jake Dowell is questionable. Defenseman Brent Seabrook is out and so is forward Tomas Kopecky. (csnchicago.com/@TramyersCSN)

VAN: Andrew Alberts (wrist) could return for the series. Manny Malhotra (eye) is done for the season. (nhl.com)

QUOTED

Jonathan Toews, CHI: “We haven’t been able to prove that we can be a better team than them on one single night. We’ve got one more chance to do that. This is our last string of life here.”

“Everyone has to do it. No one is an exception now. Everyone has to bring something out now. If you’re a goal scorer, you have to score goals and hit and do everything. If you’re a role player, you’ve got to hit and maybe find a way to score a goal or two as well. Everyone has to bring their best game and be a complete player, not leave anything out there. There’s nothing to hold back now.” (nhl.com)

Kevin Bieksa, VAN: “Nothing changes here. We go out, we’re physical and we get pucks behind them and we play a little bit cleaner game. They’re the ones that are playing the guessing game right now. For us, we haven’t made any adjustments. We don’t have to adjust going to Game 4. It’s up to them to do whatever they have to do” (Vancouver Sun)

Sigh: Blackhawks vs. Vancouver Canucks Review

Blackhawks lose to the Vancouver Canucks 3-2.

Vancouver leads the series 3-0.

__

Just.

Sigh.

This game was an encapsulation of just about everything that was wrong with the Blackhawks the entire year, and I’m not just talking about the players themselves. Let’s go over the list:

  • The Blackhawks have looked gassed for long stretches of the year, and it’s no different here. Why do they look gassed? Well…
  • The Blackhawks can’t roll four lines any more. Most of the stars are pulling double shifts, and it shows. When Duncan Keith — who, up until this year, was the model of stamina — looks ready to pass out, the team has problems.
  • The power play was clown shoes. Even though their two goals came from the power play, it came from seven tries. This started late in the regular season, and it’s been that way ever since.
  • Coach Q’s suspect coaching decisions come back to haunt the team. Really, who puts John Scott into a playoff game? I love John Scott as a human being — but the man has hands and feet of cement. Plus, he took a dumb penalty that led to Vancouver’s first goal, which changed the momentum of the game completely. Moreover, who sits Ryan Johnson, who’s been a stabilizing force at center when we desperately needed it?
  • But, of course, Coach Q’s coaching decisions might just exist because the front office has not given him as much to work with as he used to have. I understand that they had to ship people away because of the salary cap. I get that. But the pieces they brought in haven’t contributed much. Ryan Johnson and Chris Campoli are good additions to the team — but they didn’t come in until it started looking as if the Blackhawks were not going to make the playoffs. Sometimes, I wonder what goes through Stan Bowman’s brain — but, if I knew that, I’d be in the front office making mad dollars and not writing this.

(I’m not even going to go into the hit on Brent Seabrook by Raffi Torres. It was determined that he would not receive any supplementary discipline for the hit from the NHL. I’m obviously biased in my love of Seabrook, so me writing about it will not go so well.)

I’m not ready to say goodbye to this team for the summer, so I hope they can get it together for what could be the last game of the season. But even if they can’t win tomorrow, I hope that they at least try. That’s all I’ve wanted this entire season — please attempt to look like you care, Blackhawks, for God’s sake.

Captain Force of Nature watch: Two assists, but still a -1. He also won 16-26 (62%) of his faceoffs.

Duncan Keith plus/minus rating watch: -1. At least you scored a goal? But you’re still a long-haired nitwit.

Coach Q face color watch: Brick red. Again. This was partially his own fault, however, so I can’t feel too much sympathy for him.

Post-game quotes from @TramyersCSN:

Q on Torres hit: “Brutal. Major. Absolutely. They missed it. we could’ve gotten four goals on that one.”

Q: “We’re lucky (Seabrook) is a big Canadian kid. Someone else would’ve been on a stretcher.”

Q if Torres should be suspended: “Not my call. The guy didn’t even get through his first game back off one.”

Q: “I thought it was a major (penalty) live and after seeing the replay, clearly.”

Sharp: “I’m not looking at who’s scoring, who’s playing well, who r the good players/bad players. I just know we lost the game.”

Kane: ” I should have buried a couple (shots). I have to step up and make those shots and make the game a little bit different.”

Today’s Headlines: The Ryan Johnson Bandwagon Edition

Ryan Johnson: Certified Badass. (Image: bridgetds | flickr)

Let’s start this off this bit of appreciation for Ryan Johnson with a quote from Jonathan Toews:

“It was fun to see him sliding across the ice blocking shots. … We haven’t had too much of that from our forwards. He’s the type of guy we can learn from. He definitely gave us a boost.”

Toews is the builder and driver of this bandwagon — we’re just riding on it. (ESPN Chicago)

If that didn’t make you love him, how about this? Ryan Johnson is a lesbro and doesn’t give a damn about what you think. (AfterEllen.com)

In other news, if you missed me on The Program on Sunday night, you can listen to the Sunday Night Sin Bin here. I’m on around the 90-minute mark. (The Program)

Join Billy Dec at Rockit Wrigley for Chicago Blackhawks Appreciation Night. Or don’t, because he’s kind of a douche. Either way, I won’t judge. (AChicagoThing.com)

Finally, remember the Patrick Sharp Chicago Magazine cover that made me incoherent? Well, the article is online, along with a behind-the-scenes video from ChicagoMag.com:

Today’s Headlines: The #snOMG Edition

We are so screwed. (Image via weather.com)

The game is still on in Columbus at 6pm tonight. You might think that the NHL would consider canceling games — but considering their recent record of playing games during snowstorms, you’d be absolutely wrong. (NY Times)

If you were planning on going to one of the official Blackhawks road watch parties, both the city and the suburban watch parties have been canceled. STAY INSIDE, PEOPLE. (via @NHLBlackhawks on Twitter)

Turco gets the start in Columbus tonight. If you watched Crawford’s games against the Flyers and especially the Wild last week, you’ll understand why. (ESPN Chicago)

And speaking of the Wild game, Hossa had missed the game with a bout of vertigo. But he says he’s ready for Columbus. In other news, Ryan Johnson missed practice yesterday with a lower body injury, and Nick Leddy was recalled from Rockford. Pretend to be surprised by that last bit of information. (CSN Chicago)

Brian Campbell got engaged over the All-Star Break. Congrats to Soupy and Lauren! (video via CSN Chicago)

According to Tim Sassone, the Blackhawks might be traveling directly to Vancouver due to the weather. Good luck getting out of Columbus tonight, fellas. (via @TimSassone on Twitter)
