Hockey Day In America is a celebration of the sport in the United States and the culmination of Hockey Weekend Across America. Starting at 11am, NBC is airing an entire day of hockey games and mini-documentaries. And it’s coming to you live from the home of the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, Chicago! The Stanley Cup is at Millennium Park from 11am – 3pm today, along with hometown boy Eddie Olczyk and the rest of the NBC crew.
Three regional games will air at deliberately staggered times to make sure that NBC can cut to each game during intermissions — Buffalo Sabres vs. Washington Capitals at 11:35am CT, New York Rangers vs. Philadelphia Flyers at 11:40am CT, and Minnesota Wild vs. Detroit Red Wings at 11:45am CT. At 2:30pm CT is the national game — and guess what game that is?

In other related news, the New York Times released a chart from USA Hockey documenting the growth of participatory hockey in the United States. The states with the most hockey growth?
But hockey in the South is still a bad idea, am I right? (Illinois ranks 24th in growth with a 7.3% increase, by the way.)ÂÂ

Um…. um….
(dammit, should NOT have had that sixth lemonade shooter last night.)

Is it really surprising that states that likely had little exposure to hockey 10 years ago would have a larger growth than established markets?

It is if you’re, like, Damien Cox. Other than that, it’s pretty much common sense, isn’t it?
