Not to take anything away from Shane Doan, because he is an absolutely fantastic player, leader and person (from what I’ve heard about him). I personally feel that this is just an absurd amount of money and a term that is a few years to long for someone who is past their prime and much closer to their retirement than winning the Calder Trophy.
Signing Shane Doan would not be the worst thing in the world for a team lacking in the leadership department, but being reasonable about it is something that the front office leadership needs to reevaluate. Since Terry Pegula took over the team, they’ve been shelling out money like it grows on trees (or in Pegula’s case, out of oil wells). Sometimes, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should (Ville Leino….).
If this happens, which I sincerely doubt it will, the Sabres will gain a great leader that can offer advice and mentor Jason Pominville and the other young guys on the team. If it doesn’t happen, the team saves the cap space and a roster spot. After all, Tyler Ennis is still without a contract and there are a surplus of players hanging out in Rochester more than ready to make the full time jump to the NHL.
