After Real Salt Lake conceded four goals last week against LA, it was a welcomed change to score four and not concede any.
RSL controlled the game easily, with 65 percent possession, outshooting Columbus 17-4, and completing 556 passes to their 296. The first half had chances, the most dangerous coming from a short corner taken by Kyle Beckerman who passed it to Javier Morales. Morales found the feet of Ned Grabavoy who nutmegged Will Trapp in the 18 yard box and managed to get a shot off even though it was straight at Columbus’ keeper.
The opening goal didn’t come until stoppage time of the first half. Javier Morales took a free kick that deflected off the wall, hit Beckerman’s foot, and went into the goal. 1-0 RSL just before half time.
The second goal came 5 minutes after half time. Olmes Garcia got on the end of a through ball from Javier Morales and slipped it across the face of goal to Devon Sandoval who had a simple tap in. Textbook soccer.
Ned Grabavoy and Sebastian Velasquez had some good combination play at the top of the box, and it was Grabavoy who had the patience to pick his head up and find Luis Gil making a simple run. Gil controlled the ball, cut it to the inside, and slotted it into the back of the net for the third goal of the night in the 82nd minute.
The last goal came in the 88th minute. Velasquez crossed a ball into the box that deflected straight to the feet of Kyle Beckerman who had an easy one touch to score his 2nd of the night. 4-0 RSL.
