The most important game of the 2013 season for Real Salt Lake will be Tuesday when they play in the U.S. Open Cup final against DC United, so of course they are going to rest their regular starters. That meant that the reserves would travel to Vancouver to take on the Whitecaps. (Reserves meaning players who don’t get a ton of first team minutes, but easily could be if they were playing on another team.) RSL are THAT deep this year.
Olmes Garcia passed the ball out wide for Lovel Palmer who put a perfect cross into the 18 yard box for Devon Sandoval. Sandoval beat his mark to the ball and headed the ball into the back of the Whitecaps’s net, putting the road team in the lead in the 8th minute.
Vancouver almost equalized in the 36th minute when a deflected cross fell to the feet of Russell Teibert who volleyed it powerfully at the RSL goal, but back up goal keeper, Jeff Attinella, parried the ball away for a corner.
In the second half, Yordany Alvarez had a volley of his own. The ball fell to him on the outside of the 18 yard box, and Alvarez did a great job to keep the shot on frame. But Vancouver’s goalie, David Ousted, matched Attinella and pushed it away. Olmes Garcia and Joao Plata both nearly scored as well, but Ousted and his post denied them of a goal each.
Next up, RSL play DC United at home Tuesday, Oct. 1 in the U.S. Open Cup final.
