Royals winter league update

Another week, another KC Royals winter league update!

mpl logoLet’s start in the Mexican Pacific League, where the second half began on November 22nd. Hermosillo won the first half by three and a half games. In the second half, they are just 1-2, with Ryan Verdugo picking up the win on November 23rd. He allowed one run on four hits and three walks over five innings. He allowed a solo home run in the 5th inning to account for the only run. Verdugo struck out five and threw 52 of his 95 pitches for strikes. He also induced five ground out and two fly outs.

Los Mochis finished the first half at 17-17 and are 0-3 in the second half. Spencer Patton pitched just once this past week and that came in their final game of the first half. He pitched a perfect ninth inning, throwing nine of his 12 pitches for strikes. He also struck out a batter.

Moving on to the Puerto Rican League.

Mayaguez is in second place at 9-8 and Irving Falu has played every day. He is in the midst of a four game hitting streak, though he only hit .182 (4-for-22). Falu was designated for assignment this week, so I do not know how much longer he will be a Royal.

Christian Colon continues to play every day for Ponce (9-9) and a move to the sixth spot in the order has done wonders for his offense. In five games batting lower in the order, he is 10-for-20 (.500) with two doubles, two walks, three runs scored, and three RBIs. He had a hit in all six games last week. Colon played one game at third base last week, while playing shortstop in the rest.

For Santurce (6-10), Jack Lopez has begun to play every day. In four games last week, he had two hits in each while playing second base. He batted ninth in the first two games and second in the next two. Overall, Lopez hit .500 (8-for-16) with two doubles, a triple, and a game-tying solo homer in the ninth on November 21st.

Reliever Sam Runion did not pitch for Mayaguez and since he has now signed with Tampa Bay, I will no longer be updating on him.

Now to the Dominican Winter League.

Pedro Ciriaco played every day for Escogido (19-11 and in first place). Overall last week, he went 5-for-20 (.250). He played third base in every game and committed his third error in the DWL on November 18th in a game that he did not start. He is in the midst of a four game hitting streak.

Jason Bergmann made two appearances out of the bullpen for Escogido and allowed a run in both. On November 18th, he allowed one run on five hits and a hit batter over three innings. He struck out two and induced two ground outs and two fly outs. He entered that game to start the 3rd inning. On Sunday, Bergmann allowed a solo home run in the 7th inning while only recording one out.

Kelvin Herrera made one appearance out of the bullpen for Escogido (November 20th) and struck out two in his perfect inning.

Francisley Bueno made his first appearance in winter ball and that came in a November 19th start for Licey (18-12). He allowed five hits and a walk over four scoreless innings. He struck out four. Maikel Cleto made one relief appearance for Licey on November 23rd. He struck out two in his perfect inning.

Santiago Garrido made one appearance last week for Aguilas (16-13). He pitched the fifth and three batters into the sixth. In just 2/3 of an inning, he allowed three runs on two hits. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch while allowing an inherited runner to score. Catcher Francisco Pena played once for Aguilas, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on November 22nd (he was pinch-hit for in the ninth).

To the Venezuelan Winter League, where Salavdor Perez is having himself a very nice winter ball season for La Guaira (18-20). He caught one game of his six games, while playing first base in the other five. He had at least one hit in each game. Overall, Perez went 10-for-28 (.357) with three doubles, a triple, six runs scored, and three RBIs.

Sugar Ray Marimon pitched in two games last week for Lara (16-21 and in last place). In his relief appearance on November 18th, he pitched two perfect innings. On November 23rd, he made a start, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over four innings. Marimon allowed a home run. He struck out two and induced seven ground outs to one fly out.

Manny Pina played in five games for Margarita (17-22) last week. He had at least one hit in the four games that he started. Overall, Pina went 7-for-14 (.500) with a home run, four runs scored, and four RBIs.

The newly re-signed Gorkys Hernandez continues to play every day for Caribes (25-14 and in first place). Overall, he went 4-for-20 (.200) with a double, a home run, five runs scored, and three RBIs. Hernandez was taken out on Sunday after being hit by a pitch.

Paulo Orlando (Lara) and Juan Graterol (La Guaira) did not play last week.

Finally to the Australian Baseball League, where the Melbourne Aces are just 3-7.ABL_Logo_FB

Both Justin Trapp and Jared Schlehuber played in all three games this past weekend for the Aces. Trapp led off once again and went a combined 2-for-12 (.166). He played second base once and centerfield twice. Schlehuber went 4-for-11 (.363) over the weekend. He played third base in the first game and committed his first error in the ABL. He played first base in the final two games (while batting cleanup).
