Royals winter league recap

The Dominican Winter League regular season came to an end on Sunday. The three teams with KC Royals players representing all made the postseason.

dominican_winter_league_logoEscogido clinched the top spot headed into the postseason. Last week, lefty reliever Zach Jackson made one appearance (December 19th). He started the 10th inning and allowed a hit while inducing a ground out (1/3 of an inning). Jason Bergmann also made one appearance (December 18th). He entered the game in the 3rd inning with two men on base and stranded them both. He allowed one run on three hits over three innings. Bergmann struck out five.

Third baseman Pedro Ciriaco did not play last week.

Aguilas has the same record (31-19). Catcher Francisco Pena had a pretty good week. Over five games, he went 5-for-17 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs. On December 18th, Pena pinch-hit in the 8th and delivered a two out RBI single.

Licey finished in third place with a 29-21 record. Second baseman Emilio Bonifacio went 7-for-24 in five games. He scored four runs and drove in two. However, he struck out four times and committed three errors.

Francisley Bueno made one start last week (December 19th). He allowed one run on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out one. Bueno induced nine ground outs and one fly out. Maikel  Cleto picked up his first winter ball win on December 20th. He pitched four perfect innings of relief. He struck out three.

 

Moving on to the Venezuelan Winter League, where the regular season ends on December 29th.

Caribes remains in first place with a 36-23 record. Centerfielder Gorkys Hernandez went just 3-for-15 in four games. He did score five runs and stole two bases. He even had another outfield assist on December 20th.

Salvador Perez continues to play every day for La Guaira (30-29). In seven games last week, he went 9-for-30 with a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored. He caught one game, was the DH in two games, and played first base in the rest.

Lara is just 27-32. Mike Moustakas moved from the five spot in the lineup to cleanup over the week. He went a combined 7-for-17 with four doubles and four RBIs. He walked twice, struck out twice, and hit into two double plays. Centerfielder Paulo Orlando continues to bat behind Moose. He went 3-for-18 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Unfortunately, he struck out six times.

 

In the Puerto Rican League, Santurce is still in last place (16-19). The PRL regular season ends on December 30th. Second baseman Jack Lopez batted both second and leadoff. He went a combined 4-for-15 with a run scored and a stolen base. He did strike out four times.

 

ABL_Logo_FBFinally in the Australian Baseball League, Melbourne is in third place at 14-12.

Centerfielder Justin Trapp moved to the fifth spot of the Aces order and went 5-for-13 with two doubles, three runs scored, and a stolen base. He did strike out twice and committed his fifth error of the season. Third baseman Jared Schlehuber continues to bat third in the Aces order. He went 5-for-14 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He did strike out five times and committed his third ABL error.
