Royals drop third straight

The KC Royals, who were once one of the hottest teams in baseball, have now lost three in a row as they started their five game road series in Detroit with a 4-1 loss. The loss dropped the Royals to 8.5 games back of first place in the American League Central.

And to think the Royals scored first (on a Alex Gordon two out single).

However, Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie allowed a two-run home run to Prince Fielder in the bottom of the first and the lead was quickly gone. Guthrie allowed 13 hits over seven innings. He did not allow another run though until the fifth (another two run inning).

Though many people were complaining on Twitter about Chris Getz batting leadoff, he actually did a good job. He went 2-for-4 and worked a long at-bat to lead off the game. It was a nine pitch AB as he picked up a single and scored the game’s first run.

Louis Coleman got into the game and pitched a perfect 8th inning. He threw just eight pitches.

For the Tigers, Andy Dirks went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs.

The two teams will play a day-night doubleheader on Friday, as Justin Verlander goes up against Danny Duffy in the first game. James Shields will start the nightcap. The Royals need a DH sweep to stay in the playoff hunt.

*In roster news, the Royals designated Elliot Johnson for assignment with the arrival of newly acquired Emilio Bonifacio. Bonifacio went 1-for-4 in his Royals debut.
