Just as I hit publish on my Yost hands Chen a rotation spot article, word comes out that the KC Royals made the Bruce Chen signing official. What was shocking to me was who they designated for assignment.
That would be utility man Emilio Bonifacio, who will be headed to the Caribbean Series to play for Licey, who won the Dominican Series.
Didn’t manager Ned Yost say during the winter meetings that they had total confidence in Bonifacio handling the every day second base job in 2014 (then they signed free agent Omar Infante)? Maybe their scouts in the DR were not thrilled with Bonifacio’s every day defense at second base for Licey (he has nine postseason errors).
I was thinking that the Infante signing would put more pressure on Mike Moustakas at third base because either Infante or Bonifacio could force him out. Instead, it looks as if a slimmer Moose (he says he lost ten pounds and is in the best shape of his life) will be handed the starting third base job.
I was looking forward to see Emilio and his younger brother Jorge participate in their first spring training together. Instead, I expect Emilio to be heading to greener pastures with another team.
