Royals avoid arbitration with Maxwell

On Tuesday night (while I was inundated with snow), the KC Royals announced that they have avoided arbitration with outfielder Justin Maxwell.

royals logoAccording to ESPN’s Sportscenter, Maxwell will make $1.325 million in 2014 (the Royals of course did not disclose the monetary amount).

After being acquired at the July trading deadline last season, Maxwell hit five home runs and drove in 17 runs in 35 games. His biggest hit of 2013 came in the Royals final home game of the season on September 22nd: he hit a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the tenth against Texas Rangers reliever (and former Royals closer) Joakim Soria.

This signing leaves the Royals with just two more players eligible for arbitration and both are relievers: closer Greg Holland and Aaron Crow. Holland asked for $5.2 million, while the Royals offered $4.1 million. Crow asked for $1.7 million, while the Royals offered $1.28 million.
