Twitter Tuesday: Optimism Is Hard To Find In Duval

After Sunday’s performance it’s a miracle people are still even talking about the Jaguars, let alone admitting to be a fan. As you shouldn’t be surprised, this won’t be the most positive or uplifting post on Roaring Black & Teal.

How could it be? What kind of positive tweet can come from a 27-7 loss in which the Jaguars only had 117 total yards! Please let me know how you’d put a positive spin on that on in less than 140 characters.

Surprisingly enough, the Jaguars are still being mentioned on Twitter… For the good & the bad…

Well thank you BCB because I’m definitely going to need a pint of this before I put myself to bed on Sunday nights, you know to avoid crying myself to sleep…

Thanks for the reminder that some have moved on from this franchise & onto more successful teams and careers….

#StoryOfMyLife

See… Not EVERYONE has lost hope. Way to hang in their buddy….

2011 Was A Wild Ride, But We’ve Crossed The Finsh Line

After 17 long weeks of enduring stress & disappointment each week, the Jaguars football season has come to an end. It’s a bittersweet ending to the 2011 season. On one hand we know longer have to watch our beloved team lose every week, on the other hand we now have to watch MLB & NBA highlights for the next 8 months.

This week doesn’t just mark the end of the season, but the end of an important era in Jacksonville football. As today Shahid Khan will officially take over as the owner of the franchise.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on this season & look ahead to next season.

How did the writers of Roaring Black & Teal think this season went?

Corinna’s View: Week One, I was glowing with excitement for this upcoming season. That glow disappeared after week two. I’m sure you’ve heard me say it before & I promise this is the last time I’ll mention it… THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE SEASON! With the Colts sucking for Luck and Tennessee being inconsistent, there was only one team between the Jaguars & the division title. Well – I guess that didn’t go according to plan!

Sure this season was disappointing to say the least, but I think there are a few good things we can take away from it. Starting with the fact we are now in the hunt for a new head coach. I mean if this season was good for anything it was to prove Jack Del Rio had overstayed his welcome in Jacksonville.

Another thing we can be grateful for is the fact we had a healthy Maurice Jones-Drew on the field throughout the entire season. Who know what this season could’ve looked like if it wasn’t for MJD… Chances are we’d be duking it out with the Colts for the first overall pick. Contributing to 95% of the team’s offense (exaggeration) earned MJD the 2011 NFL rushing title. At least he has a nice, new title to congratulate him on all the hard work he put in this season.

One last thing I think we can take away from this season is the defense. Last season no one in their right mind would predict that the Jaguars would finish 2011 with the 6th ranked defense in the NFL. Thanks to the efforts of Mel Tucker & Gene Smith we actually have a defense we can be proud of. Now if we could only work on that offense….

EJ’s View: There’s no doubt that finishing 5-11 is a disappointment, but this season marked the beginning of change. No more of that rebuilding mumbo-jumbo. No more of the same schemes, decisions, and play-calling that plagued this team for years. And lets not forget that we have THE best running back in the NFL, Maurice Jones-Drew.

Plus a defense that was ranked 29th in the league the previous and improved to as high as 4th, and finished the league 6th, in total defense. We saw our rookie quarterback make strides towards the end of the season. Enough for me to give him my vote of confidence.

I don’t want to really mention the injuries, but 30+ guys were placed on injured reserve this season, many of which had significant roles on the team. Just saying.

The addition of offensive weapons and some more depth will go a long way in determining this team’s future success.

With the new owner taking over, a coaching search underway, and free agency just around the corner, I suspect the Jaguars to have one of the most improved teams in 2012.
Which player do we believe made the biggest impact this season?

EJ’s View: Maurice Jones-Drew. It’s pretty much a no-brainer to me. The guy only broke the great Fred Taylor’s franchise single season rushing record. And he only led the NFL in rushing yards. And he was only voted to the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive year (even though it is a FARCE that this guy isn’t the starter).

Jones-Drew did it all this season, averaging over 100 yards rushing a game for the season. On a team that finished last in total offense. A team that could not move the ball without Maurice running. A team who’s opponents knew that they would run, and stacked the line as much as possible. Yet, he still led the league in rushing.

Now that’s an impact.

Corinna’s View: To me suggesting Maurice Jones-Drew would be to obvious. Instead I’m going to pick someone else I believe is just as deserving. After finishing the season with 119 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 2 sacks & 2 interceptions, I believe LB Paul Posluszny had a huge impact on this season.

As mentioned before, the Jaguars defense finished 6th this season & that can be largely attributed to Posluszny’s performance on the field. After signing the free agent from Buffalo in the offseason, Posluszny proved to be worth every penny. The LB only missed two snaps all season, one of which was due to his shoe falling off. Ooops.

Posluszny injured his shoulder in week 17 & was reportedly having an MRI earlier this week. After a nice long off season he should be in great shape to return for the 2012 season.

How do we think Blaine’s first season went?
EJ’s View: Blaine Gabbert. BG11. Sunshine. Call him what you want but I have a gut feeling that this guy is going to be one heck of a quarterback. He had a rough rookie season, but lets not forget that the guy is 22.

Oh, and that his receiving corps was the worst in the league. You don’t believe me? Remember when Jason Hill was our #1 option at receiver and then he got cut? How many teams could cut their #1 receiver and none of the 31 other teams puts in a claim for him? We cut our #1 receiver and NOBODY wanted him. Now you tell me how our receiving corps is better than it is.

Don’t get me wrong, I know that Blaine has to improve. I know he has to work on pocket presence and all of that jazz. But towards the latter end of the season I saw improvements in his mechanics, and his decision making has been pretty good for a rookie.

Now we sit and watch. We see how the new coach allows for Blaine to develop. It will definitely depend on the scheme and philosophy that the new coach, or offensive coordinator, brings in. Del Rio, for whatever reason, was a big fan of the maximum protection passing plays, where there were only 2-3 players eligible to catch the ball. Can’t win like that. Not in this league.

So lets see what the Jaguars do in free agency, and then in the draft. It’s a guarantee that they will address wide receiver in one or the other, and possibly both. After that, let the offseason take its course.

But I will say this again, Blaine Gabbert has my vote as the current and future starting quarterback of this team.

Corinna’s View: I completely agree with EJ on this one. Clearly Blaine’s first season didn’t go as well as we had hoped. If Gabbert had entered the NFL in prior season he probably wouldn’t be getting so much crap. However, he entered in the same year as other successful rookie QBs such as Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, TJ Yates, & Jake Locker.

Cam Newton broke all previous rookie records in week one. Andy Dalton led his team to the playoffs. TJ Yates can’t take credit for getting his team to the playoffs, but he can say that he didn’t screw it up after the two starting QB were injured. He has proved during that time he deserves a starting role. Even Jake Locker made Blaine look like a fool during a few brief glimpses.

Like EJ stated, clearly Blaine’s support system was less than mediocre. It seemed as though everytime a WR was cut from an NFL team, the Jags were there to scoop them up.

The lack of success in Blaine’s first season could be blamed on the WR, lack of experience, the head coach, or play calling but in the end Blaine has a problem. He is scared. Scared to be hit, scared to make big plays, just down right scared. Nothing can change that. In this offseason I’d like to see him man up & show Jacksonville why he was a first round draft pick.
Corinna’s View on the Head Coach Vacancy

With the head coaching position in Jacksonville still vacant, rumors are flying around Duval as to whom will replace Jack Del Rio has the head coach. Names such as Atlanta’s offensive coordinator, Mike Mularkey has been thrown into the mix. Mularkey was a potential candidate for the head coaching position in Denver back in 2010 but declined.

The Jaguars have formally asked the Broncos for permission to interview their offensive coordinator, Mike McCoy. Broncos head coach John Fox has attributed Tebow’s success to McCoy ‘s ability to restructure the offense to better suit his strengths.

Let’s not forget about the front runner in this race, interim head coach Mel Tucker. After ending the season on a more positive note, Tucker is still a potential candidate for the head coaching position. In 2011, Tucker managed to turn around Jacksonville’s defense that finished 6th in the NFL this season. If Tucker does not receive the position chances are he will remain the defensive coordinator in Jacksonville, unless he opts to interview for another head coaching position.

EJ’s View on Potential Draft Picks
With the regular season just ending, it is difficult to accurately say which players the Jaguars should target (yes I know you want Blackmon). The reality of it is that we have to see what the Jaguars do in free agency first, and we also have to see how the future rookies perform at the combine. After that I will have a better guesstimate of what the team will do. But I can tell what positions I think the Jaguars will probably need to immediately address once the draft is here.

- Wide Receiver: You know the story. The group as a whole is arguably the worst in the league. One, even two receivers in the offseason may not be enough. I expect the team to look long and hard at…. I almost got you didn’t I?

- Cornerback: The team had a rough onslaught of injuries this season in the secondary. But the group played hard through the injuries. I feel that now is the time to get a young corner to groom into a future starter. Derek Cox has proven to play pretty well when on the field. The Mathis contract situation will be interesting to watch, but I hope he stays. Either way, the position will need to be addressed.
Corinna’s View on the Beginning of a New Era

Shahid Khan is officially the owner of the franchise, as of today. With this comes the responsibility of picking a new head coach; a process that Khan said he would actively be a part of.

In a press conference, Khan discussed that he wanted to establish the Jaguars as a premier organization. He even has plans to increase the Jaguars foreign fan base; with the possibility of the team playing a few games overseas.

Khan has emphasized again & again how much he wants to make the Jaguars a successful franchise & bring home the championship to Jacksonville.

Only time will tell if Khan has what it takes to get this franchise back on board. One thing you can count on is that he has the financial means to do so.

What does EJ think needs to happen in the offseason?
  • EVERYONE needs to get healthy
  • An in-depth, highly researched coaching search
  • Free agent splashes, at either wide receiver, defensive end or both
  • Mastery, yes mastery, of whatever the new system will be
  • Growth by Gabbert as the leader of this team
  • A strong evaluation of the running game (as this team converts to a passing team [hopefully] some of the run-centric pieces of this offense either need to be reworked or replaced as time moves along)
  • The passing game needs to have a good rhythm heading into the preseason
  • Keep Tucker on the coaching staff if possible
  • The linebackers need to stay awesome
  • Pay Scobee
  • Pay Mincey
  • Head into next season with the bad taste of missing the playoffs the previous season

The Ultimate Jaguars Fan Christmas Wish List

With only 7 days left until Christmas it seems like the holiday season has just flown by. Are you a procrastinator when it comes to Christmas shopping?

Well don’t worry, if you have a Jaguars fan on your list I’m going to make your life a little easier… Here is are the top Christmas present that every Jaguars fan would want.

* * *

One New Head Coach

After Wayne Weaver finally gave Jack Del Rio the boot, Jaguar fans are anxiously awaiting the announcement of who will take over as head coach. Will it be Mel Tucker? What about a retired NFL coach? Maybe a head coach from NCAA?

Only time will tell. Jags fans everywhere are crossing their fingers that this head coach will delivering them a winning season!

 * * *

A Healthy Maurice Jones-Drew

In week 15 the Jaguars were embarrassed on TNF versus the Falcons. During the game MJD dominated the field as usual, proving once again he is the key piece of the Jaguars offense. However, he injured his ankle in the second half.

The star running back missed practice on Saturday & it is still unclear whether or not he will take the field on Saturday versus the Titans. Since this season is clearly over for the Jaguars I wouldn’t be surprised if he sat out. No point in rushing back if it could hurt him in the long run.

 * * *

The 2010 Version of Marcedes Lewis

After a great 2010 season, Marcedes Lewis has been less than impressive on the field this season. He has managed to show us glimpses of why he received a large contract in the off season. However he has failed to be consistent throughout the season and continues to disappoint when the Jags need him most.

  * * *

A Shorten Injured Reserve List

It seems like the Jaguars couldn’t keep a healthy body on the roster this season. Jacksonville has received the honor of having the most players on injured reserve this season. It tops the chart with 27 players. Here is a brief list of the players that could’ve had a positive impact on the team this season, if they had only stayed healthy.

RB Rashad Jennings, CB David Jones, DE Aaron Morgan, RB Richard Murphy, DT D’Anthony Smith, WR Mike Sims-Walker, TE Martin Rucker, CB Rashean Mathis, G Eben Britton, LB Kyle Bosworth, LB Clint Session, CB Derek Cox, S Courtney Greene, CB Will Middleton, DE Aaron Kampman.

  * * *

Additional Season Ticket Holders

Jaguar fans want their team to stay in Jacksonville. Well we all know what that means… MORE SEASON TICKET HOLDERS. Want less games blacked out due to low ticket sales? What the national media to stop picking on the Jacksonville fan base? If so, looks like you should add Jaguar season tickets to your Christmas wish list.

 * * *

A Top 2012 Draft Pick

With a rough 2011 season, the Jaguars have a better chance at a top 2012 draft pick. It’s debatable among Jacksonville fans whether or not the Jaguars wasted their first round draft pick on Blaine Gabbert. If you surveyed fans you’d get a wide range of players they wish Jacksonville would draft. From a new QB to a top WR, the wish list keeps growing for Jaguar fans.

  * * *

The 2013 Version of Blaine Gabbert

It’s been clear all season that rookie QB Blaine Gabbert was not ready for the starting QB role in Jacksonville. However, a series of events led to that happening & we had to deal with what we had. With a full season under Blaine’s belt many speculate that 2012 won’t be so bad.

Personally, I think next year could be just as touch & go. Until Gabbert has solid offensive targets to work with his performance won’t change so drastically. Not to mention that Gabbert just doesn’t want to get hit! Until he mans up, it will be tough to say whether or not he will ever develop into the QB we had all hoped. I think he needs at least another season before we see anything spectacular out of him.

  * * *

One Awesome Mustache

After the announcement that Wayne Weaver planned to sell the team to Shahid Khan, the Jaguars nation has been buzzing with pictures of the “khan stache”. The “Khan Stache” even made national headlines during the Jaguars MNF game versus the San Diego Chargers. Fans could be seen sporting their “khan staches” throughout EverBank. You can’t go wrong with an awesome mustache to match Jacksonville’s new owner for your loved ones. Trust me.

  * * *

Positive National Media Attention

As a Jaguar fan, I’m constantly having to defend the franchise. If it’s not about the terrible season they are having, the relocation to LA or how they should’ve drafted Tebow.

I turn on ESPN & the only time the Jaguars are mentioned is when speaking of their low attendance at home games or Maurice Jones Drew. Maybe there’s a clip of the Jaguars on SportsCenter … But it’s always a highlight of the opposing team. For just one week I’d love to see the media say nothing but positives about the Jacksonville Jaguars. For some reason I just don’t see that happening.

  * * *

A Safe & Relaxing Holiday

I know it’s been a rough season, but we have all hung in there. We only have two weeks left in the regular season & with no chance of the Jaguars making the playoffs, it seems our 2011 season has come to an end. I hope that everyone has a great holiday season, filled with love, relaxation & memories!

Happy Holidays From Roaring Black & Teal!

Hang In There Jacksonville Fans!

My fellow Jaguar fans, it’s been a long & rough season, huh? I know, I feel your pain! Starting with the end of the NFL lockout to now, we have seen our fair share of heartbreak. It all started with the cutting of David Garrard and has continued with the firing of Jack Del Rio. As Jaguar fans we really have seen it all this season.

And here we sit in Week 14 with our 3-9 record. While most NFL fans would be ashamed of their team, it seems the Jaguars Nation is not. I mean after all this record is clearly a true representation of the season.

The 2011 season was not all bad, even though it’s hard to see now.

After the 2010 season, Jaguars fans made it clear that they wanted Jack Del Rio to go. However, Wayne Weaver gave him what I will label a “redemption” season. After the second week it was clear that this “redemption” season wasn’t going to pan out the way JDR had intended. Unfortunately, by the time Weaver decided that he had made the wrong decision it was too late.

With the announcement of Jack Del Rio being dismissed, came the news that the Jaguars would have a new owner soon. Changes always leave fans to speculation and this change was no different. From the rumors of the team moving to LA to the ignorant racial comments made about the team’s new owner; it is clear that this situation will not be going over without a small scandal.

Shahid Khan will replace Wayne Weaver starting in January, but true Jaguar fans are already excited about their new leader. During the Jaguars primetime MNF, fans could be spotted sporting their “Khan Stache” on national TV. This was just the Jags Nations way of showing their support & excitement for the new owner to take over.

Rocking the stache at the MNF game with my brother, Mason.

Now I don’t want it to sound like Jaguar fans aren’t appreciative of everything the Weaver’s have done for Jacksonville. However, it is obvious that something in Jacksonville needs to change & this is a great opportunity.

During this season we have had the opportunity to watch our rookie quarterback learn & mature into what we can only hope will be a star NFL QB. I mean I know it’s been hard to watch him coward away from the tackle, miss wide open targets & constantly be ranked the 33rd quarterback in the NFL, but at least he has this season under his belt. While his future is still unclear, it seems reasonable that he would stay in Jacksonville & if that is the case then I guess he can only go up from here. I mean I guess he could try to be the 34th passer in the NFL.

You have to admit, no matter what your feelings towards Blaine are, that it is not entire his fault. This season was no different from the past few seasons. After all the QB still has no one to throw it to. Marcedes Lewis had the best season of his career in 2010, to turn around in 2011 & be completely useless. Mike Thomas is still the best option for a WR but is still not of the caliber he could be. Jarrett Dillard has shined during the season & is moving his way up the depth chart. Jason Hill made headlines this year, but not in the way he had hoped. After bad mouthing the New York Jets leading up to their game in week 2, he did nothing to impress this season & was then let go.

At the end of the day every Jaguar fan needs to sit down & thank God that we still have a healthy Maurice Jones Drew. Seriously, do it right now. Without this guy… whoa… I’m not sure I even want to venture down that road. Just think for a quick second how this season would’ve played out if MJD wasn’t on the field, I’ll give you a minute………….. Long enough… Kinda of scary, huh?

Now we all know how the Colts feel without Peyton. Speaking of which, thank God for the Colts bottoming out this year or the Jags really could be the worst team in the NFL.

You’ve heard it before & you’ll hear it again. This was just another rebuilding year in the Jaguars record books.

Can it even go down from here? Let’s just hope not.

Assuming the Jaguars don’t pull a miracle together & win a few games towards the end of the season, it’s looking like they could have a top 5 pick.

Perfect. Just what we need. Now let’s just hope that we don’t blow it!

I know it has been a long & tough season but don’t give up yet! The next few games are looking winnable! Starting with Sunday when the Jaguars will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tale of the… Not So Tape – Jaguars vs. Chargers

This game preview is unique. Forget about the Jaguars’ lack of offense outside of MoJo and the anemic passing game. How many times must we look at the same awful statistics. Forget about a defense that ranks at the top of the league in most statistical categories, since injurious have ravaged that side of the ball. And I’m not exaggerating; the Jaguars (3-7) have about 426 players on injured reserve. Ok, maybe I am exaggerating, but just a little.

But none of that is going to matter against the Chargers. The Jaguars are out of the AFC South title hunt, but have a new head coach after the firing of Jack Del Rio early in the week. What I’ve heard from people around the team is that practices have been more organized and more intense, both of which are things the offense desperately needs.

So the Jaguars break in interim Head Coach Mel Tucker on a national stage against a Chargers (4-7) team who has indescribably underachieved this season. But I sense the Chargers don’t know exactly what they’re walking in to on Monday Night Football.

Oh, did I mention the Jaguars have a new owner? Mr. Khan or “the football world’s most incredible ‘stache”, as I like to call him, has agreed to buy the team outright from the previous longtime owner, Wayne Weaver. Ah, there is just a buzz here now. People around the community are excited to see how the Jaguars play, even though the playoffs are no longer a feasible option.

And it must be noted that since Mel Tucker has taken over, coaching staff and roster moves have been made for progress of the club. Starting wide receiver Jason Hill was waived, but not picked up on waivers by any other team. That’s saying something about the receiving corps on this team. The Jaguars gave more repetitions to Jarrett Dillard in practices this week, and I have a feeling that rookie Cecil Shorts could finally see some viable gametime action.

Once again, injuries have depleted the defense, mainly the secondary (CB Mathis, CB Cox, CB Middleton) and the defensive line. But, I expect the unit to keep the team in the game. It will be up to Gabbert and the offense to find a spark and not rely heavily so on Maurice Jones-Drew as they have done all season long. I personally am wondering if Dirk Koetter was able to install a few things from his personal playbook, not the one he has been using due to the nature of Jack Del Rio’s philosophy.

With that being said, the Chargers are walking into an electric environment that is tired of being bashed on by the national media. Yes, I’m am talking directly at you ESPN. Well, typing directly at you. But no matter the motive, it is always a good thing for fans, and an organization, to be optimistic about the steps that are being taken.

So I just urge that Jaguars fans buy tickets if you can and support the team any way that you can, even if that simply means correcting a lost soul about the team not being a laughing stock. My, my, my, the excitement is back in Jacksonville. It surely feels nice.

Happy footballing.
