Oklahoma Sooners Welcome New Recruits On National Signing Day

It’s that day of the year that every college football recruitnik works so hard to prepare for. It is also that day of the year that grown men have fits over what an 18-year old kid decides to do with his life. Don’t be that guy, please.

While some Oklahoma Sooners fans have been cautiously nervous about NSD, the class has turned out to be a decent one. They unfortunately didn’t get a couple position players they needed and a could-have-been Sooner legacy, Justin Manning signed with Texas A&M. Which was announced around a month ago; his brother is Demarcus Granger.

All-in-all, the day has turned out pretty well so far. Just think Sooner Nation, you could be a fan of USC, where the recruits have jumping ship like the boat is on fire.

Just stating the obvious here when I’m looking at the signess, but pretty stoked about Keith Ford (4* RB), Hatari Byrd (4* DB), D.J. Ward (4* DE) and Cody Thomas (4* QB).

As it sits right now half way through the day, it looks like Oklahoma will finish with a Top 15 class for 2013.

Here is how it has shaped up so far (via SoonerSports.com):

A Medical Hardship Already? Bob Stoops Is A Class Act

Godby HS TE Laith Harlow

After a long day of waiting patiently by the computer, paying attention to every last tweet, text and update from the University of Oklahoma, signing day came to a close.

Oklahoma ended up with 26 commits spread out in 11 different states. Six of the commits are JUCO transfers, the other nineteen are high school athletes, that will be making the trek to Norman during the Summer.

You may be looking at this and saying, didn’t she say 26… 6 JUCO’s and 19 HS players do not equal 26.

Let me introduce you to Laith Harlow.

Harlow, a TE out of Tallahassee, FL has been a long time commit of the Sooners. Rumors starting rolling that the reason that Harlow’s LOI was so late coming in yesterday was because they were discussing the possibility of a medical hardship. The medical hardship would not count against scholarships Oklahoma receives a year, which is 85. Though it would immediately take away his eligibility.

His LOI was faxed into to Norman, but his name was not on the official release from the school later on during the day. Stoops was also very careful to skirt the Harlow issue during his press conference yesterday.

Harlow is overcoming an extremely severe back injury, and had to have surgery. Some are saying that he will never play football again. By Stoops not pulling his scholarship offer, he would be allowing Harlow to attend the University of Oklahoma, still on scholarship and still able to be a member of the Sooner family.

Bob Stoops could have pulled the kids scholly, not have to worry about filing a medical hardship and get on with his day. Instead he is still giving the kid a chance. Pretty classy move considering that most head coaches would have just turned their head and forgotten about it.

He picked Oklahoma over Alabama last May, and I’m not sure he would be in the same situation if he would have rolled with the Tide.

Good luck to Harlow, and hopefully we will have good news of a recovery process soon.

National Signing Day Eve: Ever Wondered What A National Letter of Intent Looked Like?

Tomorrow is National Signing day for the college football world. What that means is that we get to see who will be coming on to join the Sooners for the 2012 season, and help Oklahoma continue on for the Chase for Eight.

As I reported last week, we have six players who are already enrolled in school, and will get to begin Spring ball with the team in a couple months. The six include:

 Kass Everett
CB
5-11
195

 Philadelphia, Pa. / Pierce CC
 Brannon Green
TE
6-4
260

Altamont, Kan. / Fort Scott CC
 Taylor McNamara
TE
6-5
235

San Diego, Calif. / Westview HS
 Trey Metoyer
WR
6-2
185

 Whitehouse, Texas / Hargrave Military
 Chaz Nelson
DE
6-3
240

Columbus, Ohio / Garden City CC
 Jordan Wade
DT
6-4
290

Round Rock, Texas / Stony Point HS

Wednesday, I will be doing a live update on the site with each player who signs his NLI with the Sooners. Coverage starts at 9:00 AM.

Ever wondered what a National Letter of Intent looked like? Wonder no more, click HERE to see what exactly the players will be signing tomorrow.

These kids have big decisions to make tomorrow, and I know some of them are on twitter. Sooner Nation needs to remember that tweeting a potential player asking him to commit to Oklahoma in the next 24 hours is wrong, and just plain creepy. I doubt an 18 year old boy is going to base his life changing decision on you telling him where to go. It’s also against NCAA rules to do so. If you are a Sooner Club member, guess what, you’re a booster and the NCAA frowns on boosters recruiting players, right? Don’t be that guy who ruins a kids career. Let’s also not attack players who DON’T commit. It’s their choice, not yours and if they don’t want to go to Oklahoma, that’s their loss. Move on and get familiar with the kids who do sign.

Everyone excited yet?

Sooners Taking One Last Shot at DGB

Monday night, Dorial Green-Beckham will give Sooner head coach Bob Stoops an in-home visit.  This will be the last real shot at recruiting the highly sought after WR stud.

National signing day is just a little over a week away and would be a HUGE get for the Sooners if he does end up committing. Never heard of DGB? He is the No. 1 recruit in the country right now and has been offered by 2o + schools, including Oklahoma, Texas, Mizzou, Alabama and Arkansas.

He has made official visits to Arkansas and Texas. Being that he is from Missouri, he may stay close to home and end up sticking with Mizzou as his choice.

With as many transfers and decommits as of late, this is very optimistic news, though he hasn’t made an official visit to Norman, an in-home visit is just as good. Bob will be bringing Jay Norvell with him, which could be crucial.

More on this once we get official word.
