Times, They Are A Changin’ (In Norman)

My, what a awkward last couple days its been for Sooner Nation. Those of you who were screaming of wanting change, well you got it. With James Patton out as of yesterday, apparently the Sooners have also cut ties with DT coach Jackie Shipp.

They hired West Virginia o-line coach, Bill Bedenbaugh to replace Patton, but as of right now, obviously, since it just

Bill Badenbaugh

happened, no word on who will replace Shipp. The only thing I can think of that would actually cause them to replace Shipp is that they are actually moving to a 3-4 defense, where they have been running the 4-3. They need to bring in a guy who can coach it.

Don’t know much about Bedenbaugh? Well, was once a coach at Texas Tech, who is very familiar with the spread. He joined the Arizona Wildcats coaching staff in 2007, so familiarity with Mike Stoops is already there. He then went to West Virginia to work under Dana Holgorsen.

Bedenbaugh is as intense as they come. Just type his name in on YouTube and you will see what I’m talking about.

We will see what happens. Still need to bring in a coach to replace Shipp, then is that it? Let’s hope so.

Sooner Coaching Profile: Jackie Shipp

Today’s highlight coach is one of the Sooner coaches you never hear anything about, the quiet impact, Jackie Shipp.

Coach Shipp has been with the Sooners since Bob Stoops arrived in 1999. He was also a player back in the days of the King, Barry Switzer. Shipp was a linebacker from 1984-1989. He was a 1st round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins and helped them  to a 48-31 record and a trip to the 85 Super Bowl.

His coaching  history is as follows:

1999-present – Oklahoma
Defensive Line
1998 – Alabama
Defensive Line
1997 – Northeast Louisiana
Defensive Line
1996-1997 – Minnesota Vikings
Coaching Intern
1995 – Green Bay Packers
Coaching Intern
1994-1996 – Southern Illinois
Defensive Line
1993 – Tennessee-Martin
Defensive Line
1992 – Central Missouri State
Defensive Line
1991 – Langston
Linebackers

Outstanding Shipp prodigies:
• Gerald McCoy – 2009 Lombardi Finalist, Two-time All-Amerian, Two-time first team All-Big 12, 2007 Big 12, Freshman Defensive POY, 2007 Big 12 Freshman Defensive POY
• Dusty Dvoracek – Bears, 2003, 2005 All-Big 12 first team
• Tommie Harris – Bears, 2003 Lombardi winner, 2003 Bednarik and Nagurski finalist, 2002 Lombardi and Nagurski finalist, first team All-Big 12, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
• Kory Klein – 2000 second team Freshman All-American, 2001 second team All-Big 12

Shipp has always been well liked by all of his defensive players and has is well respected by all the coaches.

When you think of defense with the Sooners, everyone always looks at Defensive coordinator Brent Venables;  next time, remember the quiet smiling one, Coach Shipp.
