Oklahoma State Student Hospitalized…For Disliking Football

A student at Oklahoma State University was hospitalized over the weekend according to campus police over an argument about sports. The sport in question? Football.

Apparently the student and his roommate were discussing whether or not the sport of football was a value to society. One kid apparently didn’t like the answer he received because after the comment he decided to repeatedly punch his roommate in the face. All because he said the football was a stupid sport.

I tend to disagree that football is a stupid sport, actually I disagree completely. But I can tell you that I bet this boy learned his lesson. Never, ever to say football is a terrible sport to any Poke fan ever again.

The names of the students have not been released.

Busy Weekend Of Sooner Athletics In Norman

It’s that time of year again, school started on Monday, which means college sports are back in action. The Sooner football team kicks off next Saturday, but there are plenty of things going on in the Sooner Sports world to tide you over until then.

The women’s soccer team is hosting both Nicholls State and Vanderbilt this weekend in Norman. The Lady Sooners will face Nicholls State, Friday with a scheduled 7:00 PM kickoff. The game against Vandy is set for Sunday at 1:00 PM. The Sooners are 1-1 on the season so far.

The volleyball team is also taking the court this weekend in Norman. It is the Nike Invitational and the Sooners will be hosting: Missouri State (Friday @ 7:00) Western Michigan (Saturday @ Noon) and Tulsa (Saturday @ 7:00).

The official countdown till football is at 9 days. Get ready by going out and supporting the rest of the Sooner athletics this weekend.

Game Week: Seminoles – When a Fan Takes It a Step Overboard

Hey have you heard Sooner Nation? We have a big game this week. You may also have heard it’s in Tallahassee against Florida State. Did you know that it’s also the prime time game and a top 5 match-up? Oh, you hadn’t heard? That’s weird.

We all know what big games equal, right? Big games equal even bigger trash talk. I am a fan of the trash talk, but only when it’s done in the right fashion. I mean come on, I do live in Texas. Last night social media got the best of one Seminole fan and his classless mentality shined through. And I am pretty sure he is regretting it right now.

Every fan base has that one guy, the one that they wish would just shut-up. We all found out who FSU’s was last night. This lovely boy decided to attack Oklahoma defensive back, Tony Jefferson. There was his first mistake right there. His second mistake was the comments that he made to Tony were not only directed towards his family, but Austin Box.

Tony kept his mouth shut, but did say last night on twitter that he was being attacked by a Florida State fan and he was saying things to him about Austin and his family. He commented that he didn’t want to repeat and it bothered him. I see what you did there Tony, let Sooner Nation handle it, that way the kid gets told and you keep Coach Stoops happy at the same time by not going off on him yourself. You’re a genius, and it worked. Cue Sooner Nation.

I went back and forth on whether or not to actual repeat what the guy said, and decided that I would. I wanted to show the cause of the outrage: “Are you going to wear the number of that b**** Austin Box? He was so soft he couldn’t handle Vicodin.”

Yeah.

The super classy guy also went on to tell Tony that he hoped his mother and sister die in front  him, they get cancer and someone needs to rape them. And he also actually told him that he wants to blow him up like Timothy McVeigh. I wish I was kidding about this, but I’m not.

Well due to the magic of Internet geniuses and tracking of social media usage, people figured out the superfans real name (Michael Gagliardi). Unfortunate for Michael, his cell phone number, email address and fraternity affiliation was also figured out. From what I have been told this morning, Michael had a very, very long night. Micheal’s local and National chapter of his fraternity have been contacted for disgracing and breaking code of ethics. His twitter account got shut down last night, and he made a new one rightfully named @sorrysooners. (click link to see his apology). He also apparently said last night on the phone, (I may or may not have heard about people actually calling him) that he expects the Sooners to beat the Seminoles. Why the hostility then Michael? Let’s hope you aren’t on the Welcoming Committee when Sooners begin arriving in Tallahassee.

Again, every fan base has people like this. It isn’t just the Seminoles. I am sure he embarrassed quite a few of his own last night with his moronic behavior. I get the trash talk aspect, I do it myself. And players are used to it, but when one attacks a deceased teammate and wishes death upon family members, you crossed a line.

OU DE, Frank ‘the tank’ Alexander said it best, “They’ll put 11 out there, we’ll put 11 out there. Let the better team win.”

Remembering A Sooner Legend: Lee Roy Selmon

Oklahoma Head Coach Barry Switzer and the Selmon Brothers, Lee Roy and Dewey at the Orange Bowl in 1976 Photo Credit:Bettmann/CORBIS

College Football and the NFL lost a great one yesterday with the passing of Hall of Fame Star Lee Roy Selmon. Lee Roy is considered by some to be the best player to ever wear a Sooner uniform. He definitely is a player who left one of the longest running impressions of any Sooner in history.

Selmon suffered a stroke on Friday and passed early Sunday morning. He was 56. Selmon was a two-time All-American for the Sooners and the 1975 Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy winner. He was drafted No. one by the Tampa Bay Bucs  and was a six time consecutive Pro Bowl Selection. He played in the NFL for 9 years.

His former Sooner Coach, Barry Switzer spoke on his passing:

The Sooner family is saddened by the loss of one it’s greatest champions both on and off the field, Lee Roy Selmon. No Sooner player cast a longer shadow over its rich tradition than Lee Roy. He was the winner of both the Outland and Lombardi Award, a two-time consensus 1st Team All-American with a record of 43-2-1, two consecutive national championships, and the #1 draft pick in 1976. In addition to his accomplishments in football, Lee Roy was an honor student and is in the NCAA Academic Hall of Fame exemplifying what every student athlete should aspire to be. Beyond his many and great accomplishments, I believe the true legacy of Lee Roy Selmon lies within the kind of man he was. Lee Roy possessed a combination of grace, humility, and dignity that is rare. His engaging smile and gentleness left you feeling blessed to be in his presence. Best of all, he was all genuine. One would be blessed to have a father, son, uncle, brother, or friend like Lee Roy Selmon.”

Current Coach Bob Stoops:

There was a sense of awe every time you were in Lee Roy’s presence, and yet that was the last thing he would have wanted. He accomplished so many things in life, but remained a humble, unassuming champion. I hold up many of our previous greats as examples for our current players and Lee Roy is among the very best. All of our players would do well to follow in Lee Roy’s footsteps.

It was a Selmon family tradition for their sons to attend and play football at the University of Oklahoma. One difference about this family was that they were all good. Damn good. Lee Roy followed his brothers, Lucious and Dewey to OU in 1972 and later was the main piece on one of the best defenses to ever play on a field. His former coach, Switzer has said the Lee Roy was the best player he has ever coached.

His brothers Lucious and Dewey also were All-American defensive linemen for Oklahoma, and played on the same defensive line together in 1973. The trio is still regarded as the most famous set of brothers in OU history.

My grandmother, a HUGE Texas Longhorn fan, used to hate the Selmon Brothers. And unhappily refers to it as the “Selmon Brothers Years”. Why? Texas couldn’t get past those boys.

Selmon’s impressive career achievements:

  • 6× Pro Bowl selection (1979, 1980, 1981,1982, 1983, 1984)
  • 3× First-team All-Pro selection (1979, 1980,1982)
  • 2× Second-team All-Pro selection (1978, 1984)
  • 6× First-team All-NFC selection (1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1984)
  • 1× Second-team All-NFC selection (1983)
  • NFL 1980s All-Decade Team
  • 1979 NFL Defensive Player of the Year
  • 1982 Co-Pro Bowl MVP
  • 1979 NFL Defensive Lineman of the Year
  • 1975 Outland Trophy
  • 1975 Lombardi Award
  • 1975 UPI Lineman of the Year
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers #63 retired

After his football career, Selmon decided to stay in the Tampa area and became the atheltic director for South Florida. Selmon launched the football program, was in charge of  the construction of a new athletic facility and led the university’s move into Conference USA and currently into the Big East Conference. Selmon resigned as the USF Athletic Director in 2004. He took on the roll as president of the USF Foundation Partnership for Athletics, an athletics fund-raising organization.

Many got to experience what a great person Lee Roy Selmon was, and his impact on this world will live on. He will forever be in the memories of Sooners, Bucs and Bulls fans.

RIP Lee Roy. And a forever Boomer.

Sooners Beat Tulsa And A Star Was Born

Yesterday the Oklahoma Sooners took on Tulsa and as expected, handled it with ease, winning 47-14.

The team came out with an electricity you could feel throughout the stadium and was felt until the waning moments of the 4th quarter. This season is dedicated to the memory of Austin Box, and Tom Wort, had the honor of wearing the No. 12 jersey to show his respect. Wort also earned his first game ball with his performance.

Wort on wearing No. 12:

A special moment to see the crowd react like that, wearing my friend’s jersey. It was a special moment. I got to run out there, go to midfield and just see the crowd go nuts.

Tom Wort wore 12 in honor of his late friend and teammate, Austin Box

The defense dominated the entire game, and Tulsa never had a chance with the Sooners fast paced offense. Both sides of the ball were fatigued by halftime for the Golden Hurricane.

A new star emerged last night in walk-on running back, Dom Whaley. He had three touchdown runs in the first half and a 32-yarder that put Oklahoma 44-7 in the third quarter.

A look at stats for both teams. Sooners listed in first column.

First Downs 34 15
 Total Yards 663 400
 Passing Yards 417 271
 Rushing Yards 246 129
 Number of Plays 100 64
 Penalties-Yards 2-20 5-44
 3rd Down Conversions 11-19 5-14
 4th Down Conversions 1-1 1-1
 Kick Return Yards 2-53 8-157
 Punt Return Yards 0-0 0-0
 Punts-Yards 4-160 8-299
 Turnovers 1 3
 Time of Possession 36:38 23:22

Was a great atmosphere, as always, in Norman on game day. This game was special, being that we are playing in memory of Austin and the players seem focused and determined. Even with the No. 1 tag looming over their heads. Can we keep it up? Only time will tell. Stoops has time over the next two weeks to make adjustments.

Oklahoma is on bye next week and then travel to Tallahassee to take on what possibly could be their biggest game of the season with Florida State.

Game one is in the books.

Breaking Down The Competition: Tulsa Golden Hurricane

In opening weekend, Oklahoma takes on in-state rival Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. I guess it is unfair to use the term ‘rival’ in this match-up though.

A lot of people like to use the saying, “Don’t always count the underdog out” but in this case, I don’t think it is appropriate.

Tulsa ended out the 2010 season 10-3 and a trip to a bowl game. They also own one of the best offensive units around. They are returning 10 starters this year, and with that includes QB G.J. Kinnie, which some claim is the best QB in the state of Oklahoma. Last season, Kinnie threw for 3,650 yards had 31 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions and rushed for 557.

He will be missing one major weapon in Damaris Johnson, who had 2,628 all-purpose yards last season and led the Nation. Demaris and his girlfriend decided that they were the next great money saving couple and steal $2,200 worth of clothing from a Macy’s department store. He has been suspended from the team indefintely.

On the other side of the field is a totally different story. The defense was one of the worst in college last year. When going up against some of the best receiver corps in the country (Stills, Broyles), they should have their hands completely full.

Oklahoma WR's Kenny Stills and Ryan Broyles

In Sooner news, Ronnell The Hammer Lewis has been cleared by the NCAA and will be on the field come game time for Oklahoma. We will most likely get to see some work from Dom Whaley, the walk-on RB who has been a beast at work outs. And Tony Jefferson wants everyone to know he is NOT suspended and to please stop saying that.

So with the only line of Tulsa’s defense being their actual offense, I think it is safe to say that the Sooners will dominate very early this Saturday.

If I was a betting woman, for obvious reasons, I would be putting my money on Oklahoma to handle Tulsa with ease. But this is CFB and crazier things have happened.

Notice DE Ronnell Lewis is as the starter. He has had some eligibility questions swirling around him, which still has not been addressed publicly by Stoops other than he was attending to personal matters. Obviously we will have an answer this week.

A big shocker in the depth chart was the listing of walk-on Dom Whaley as possible No. 1 in the RB position. He has been very impressive during Spring Sessions for the last couple of years, but has never been put to test on the field. Definitely interested in seeing how he stacks up in game situations.

Five Days….

ESPNU All-Access – Featuring Oklahoma Football Day 3 & 4

Finally got a chance to watch episode 3 of the ESPNU Sooner All-Access.

Good look at the coaches this episode. Lots of good stuff from defensive backs coach Willie Martinez and as always, head coach Bob Stoops.

If you missed it, check it out below.

http://youtu.be/HQfNSB6oKO0

And last but not least, day 4. Which had to be the best episode. What a great look at the players interacting with the kids and families on fan appreciation day. And a picture of Stoops in his playing days trying to tackle the great Billy Sims? Yup.

The King Has Spoken: Barry Switzer Reaction On The Miami Fiasco

I know, I know…. Barry Switzer talking violations is very… well… pot calling the kettle black. But in pure Barry Switzer fashion, he has again turned something into radio gold. He was a guest on a Philadelphia station, 97.5 The Fanatic where he was asked to talk about his thoughts on the Miami situation and why new Miami head coach Al Golden should be left out of it.

Barry Switzer

Here is a transcript of the interview with the Bootlegger’s Boy-

On the consequences being much stiffer for those head coaches who don’t immediately report the violations to their athletic departments:

You’re exactly right, and I don’t know how many radio stations I’ve said that nationally. Jim Tressel, when he got that e-mail, he should have taken that damn e-mail, walked up to his compliance officer — which we didn’t have 30 years ago, 20 years ago when I was coaching and making $130,000 or $140,000 a year  – throw it on his desk and say ‘here’s your problem, do something about it.’ And they’d be culpable in this.

But if I was a head coach today, I’d invite the president, the athletic director, the compliance officer to be at every one of my team meetings to hear coaches talk to kids that do good talks, that do good rules, they’re NCAA rules meetings, that we always have. Because we explain to those kids what their eligibility is, the importance of their eligibility and what violates their eligibility. And they all know that, every one of those kids.

They know where they can go get a good deal, they know where they can find a car at cost, they learn it because of the network, they learn it from the players before them. But kids that go violate the rules…I don’t think an assistant coach comes up and goes ‘you want a car? Go see this guy…’ Coaches don’t do that.”

What he thinks should happen to the Miami program and if he thinks it’s fair that new coach Al Golden may be punished for transgressions that he had nothing to do with:

Again, he’s got new players and is he hopeful these players are all clean? He’s a new coach, why should he pay for the sins and penalties of someone prior to him? I don’t think the NCAA will do anything to him. These guys have gone on. These guys, someone did something for ‘em, I can’t understand why in the hell the guy would turn around and try to hurt the program today and talk about it. I’ve never understood that. Some of these guys have their hand out, they want something, they get something and then they turn around and say something about the damn program. It just doesn’t make sense.

There’s no loyalty factor if they did violate the damn rules. But as far as coaches and athletic departments orchestrating illegal recruiting practices — man, it just doesn’t happen in major college football; it just doesn’t happen. Yeah there’s some individual players that are bought, and there’s some outlaws, some assistant coaches that go out and put a group together that ‘I’ma put something together and get something done for some superstar player.’ That happens, and sometimes the player tries to market himself.

But I’ma tell ya — 99 percent of the coaches in America try to do the thing the right way. We believe in ourselves, we’ve got integrity, and we’re going to go out and try to recruit right. We find someone that is violating, we turn their ass in to the NCAA. It’s as simple as that.”

Whether he thinks the University of Miami should have informed Coach Golden of the investigation during the hiring process since it’s now clear that the investigation was already underway when he was interviewing and ultimately hired:

Sure there should have been full disclosure. I had a coach hired here — an excellent coach, the one I went after, the one I wanted. I had a job opening here at Oklahoma. Back in the early ’70s; in fact, 1973 he was coming, I found out we would probably be going on probation and received a letter from the NCAA. I had to call that guy and tell him I couldn’t offer him a job.

I had to renege on that because of some allegations that had happened here prior to my taking the job. So I had to offer full disclosure. Anyone would have given him that. I think coaches take the job understanding that’s part of it, but that’s the past, that’s not my problem, they’ll give me leniency because of that. And hopefully that’s what happens.

If he’s as shocked as most are that such high profile programs like USC, Ohio State and Miami have gotten into this type of serious violations predicament recently:

None of them are immune. It’s happened in the past, it happened today, it’s going to happen in the future. You’re not going to be able to police alumni. You’ve got hundreds of thousands of people in the fanbase out there, and a minuscule of them don’t give a damn about the rules. They would rather be the buddy or best friend of some player, or star player, on the team and violate the NCAA rules. And the kid knows when he does something or takes something from that individual alumni, he knows he’s violated the NCAA rules. But he thinks he’s going to get away with it

If he feels anything should happen to coaches who jump ship before the sanctions come down:

Well, I know it’s happened with assistant coaches, I don’t know if a head coach has done it, but I know assistant coaches have been penalized and therefore were persona non grata by the NCAA and could not coach again. There was a time limit put on them; they could not be hired by an NCAA program. The NCAA is very powerful. They can control college presidents and athletic directors. I promise you. They can keep you from getting a job, and they can get your ass fired. The NCAA can follow these coaches wherever they go and penalize them, but you’ve got to have the facts with you and know it’s correct. I don’t know if you’re talking about. What program had some coach that went somewhere?”

The King has spoken.

Sooner Football Eligibility Update: Lewis and Metoyer

The question of the off-season for Sooner football has been mainly focused around the eligibility of Ronnell Lewis and Trey Metoyer.

Defensive End Ronnell Lewis

Head coach Bob Stoops did say Thursday after the scrimmage, that Defensive End Lewis, has not been practicing with the team.

Lewis did say before camp that it wasnt up to him anymore, he has to wait to see what the outcome would be. He also admitted to academic troubles.

Stoops on Lewis:

He just has some personal matters he’s tending to, which we’re in support of. Once those are taken care of, we’ll see.

Metoyer on the other hand, has been taking classes at Tyler Community College to get his grades squared away. Reports on Wednesday from the Tyler Morning Telegraph stated that Trey had NOT passed his required classes and would not be attending Oklahoma in the fall. Metoyer is a highly antcipated incoming Freshman wide reciever.

News is that Metoyer passed 9 out of 12 hours, and failed to even qualify to play JUCO football at the moment.

But Stoops says he still isnt discouraged about the situation:

As far as I understand, it’s still not totally resolved.

So hang tight Sooner Nation. As soon as more news is released we will all know what the situation is. A lot of people have been very upset/mad/irritated with the academic situation of both players and the lack of info coming out of Norman. When Stoops knows, we will know.  Until then, lets relax and get ready for some football.
