Oklahoma Sooners Baseball, Softball In Full Swing

Over the weekend, the Oklahoma Sooners baseball and softball teams continued their undefeated streaks. The baseball team, which is ranked No. 14 and picked to win the Big 12 this season, improved their record to 4-0, swept Hofstra this weekend.

The softball team, which is sitting at No. 1/2 depending on the poll, is already at a 10-0 record. They competed in the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego over the weekend beating UC Riverside, San Diego State, Kentucky, Washington and Notre Dame. The Sooners rallied for the comeback win against the Irish in the ninth inning.

The girls will travel to Palm Springs next to play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic starting on the 21st. There, they will take on Georgia, Arizona, UC Santa Barbara, Nebraska and Florida State.

The boys will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Norman on the 19th and 20th before taking off to play in the Kleberg Bank College Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Classic, which starts on the 22nd, will put the Sooners up against Iowa, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and New Mexico.

 


Sooner Baseball, Softball Looking To Move On In Postseason

The No. 4 seeded Oklahoma Sooners baseball team is set to open the Big XII Championship against No. 5 Oklahoma State. The Big XII Championship is a double-elimination tournament starting on Wednesday and will be played at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.

The game is set for 9:00 AM Wednesday, with the winner moving on to play the winner of the No. 1 Baylor and No. 8 Kansas State game. at 4:00 PM on Thursday. The loser will play Thursday at 9:00 AM.

The Sooners have won 20 of the last 27 games and are ranked No. 25 in Collegiate Baseball’s poll. The are also ranked No. 28 in the NCBWA poll and receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ poll. OSU is not ranked and is 5-5 in its last 10 games.

The Sooner softball team is also playing in postseason action this weekend, taking on No. 13 Arizona in the NCAA Super Regional. The best-of-three series is being played in Norman and starts on Friday at 1:00 PM.

The winner of the series will advance to the women’s College World Series. The Sooners are coming into the series at 48-8, while the Wildcats are 38-17. The Sooners swept the Wildcats in Tuscon last year in the Super Regional to advance to the CWS.

The second game is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Saturday and if necessary, the third game will be played at 1:30. You can view the entire women’s Regional college world series brackets here.

Both softball games will be televised, Friday’s being carried on ESPNU and Saturday will air on ESPN. The baseball game against Oklahoma State will be broadcast on Big12Sports.com and you can listen on the radio on KREF 1400 if you are in the area.

 

 

 


Sooner Baseball Closes Season With Series Against Samford

The Sooners are coming off an epic weekend, sweeping No. 2 ranked Baylor. But their bats couldn’t get it done this past Tuesday, as they lost to future conference foe, TCU 1-0. They will close out season play starting a three-game series with Samford starting Thursday night.

The series is set to start at 6:30 on Thursday, 6:30 on Friday and will conclude at 2:00 Saturday afternoon. The Sooners have won 18 of the last 24 games, and are ranked No. 24 in Collegiate Baseball’s poll. They also received votes in the USA Today Coaches’ and NCBWA poll. Samford is also coming off a big win, they beat the No. 3 Florida Gators Tuesday night.

Sooner Caleb Bushyhead

Saturday’s game marks Senior Day for the the baseball team. The Sooners will be honoring Caleb Bushyhead, Evan Mistich, Cody Reine, Erik Ross and Tanner Toal before the game on Saturday. game. Bushyhead, Reine and Ross were all part of the Sooner’s 2010 College World Series team. The five players have combined to play in 629 games with 489 starts.

The Sooners go into the game with 33-20 record, while Samford is sitting at 34-19. As always, you can follow the game on SoonerSports.com or you can listen to the game on KREF 1400 AM if you are within listening range.

Big 12 Championship Weekend in Norman

The 2011 Big 12 Track and Field Championship is being held on the University of Oklahoma campus this weekend.

The championships will be held at OU’s John Jacobs Track & Field Complex Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15.

Oklahoma’s Mens Track team is ranked 14th Nationally, and their Womens team is ranked 6th.

Also on campus this weekend is the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Regional Championship. Bringing Texas, Tulsa and University of Missouri-Kansas City into town as well.

The baseball team is also hosting New Mexico in the Sooners final home-stance of the season.

Needless-to-say, Norman will be in collegiate sports over-load come Friday.
