Fourteen Oklahoma Sooners Headed To NFL Camps

OU-LogoThe NFL draft is now complete, with six former Oklahoma Sooners being drafted. Some of the draft picks came to a surprise to many keeping close watch on the events.

Here is a list of drafted Sooners:

Lane Johnson – Round 1 – Philadelphia Eagles – pick 4

Landry Jones –  Round 4 - Pittsburgh Steelers – pick 115

Kenny Stills – Round 5 – New Orleans Saints – pick 144

Justin Brown – Round 6 – Pittsburgh Steelers – pick 185

Stacy McGee – Round 6 – Oakland Raiders – pick 205

David King – Round 7 – Philadelphia Eagles – pick 239

My player that came as a surprise was Stacy McGee going at all. I figured he would get a free agency pick-up, but with all his off the field issues, I wasn’t sure if teams would view him as a risk. Still, good for him. Hopefully this is his chance to turn things around. Surprise not drafted? Tony Jefferson. I think he was just as surprised as the rest of Sooner Nation.

Free-Agency pick-ups:

Tress Way - Chicago Bears

Tony Jefferson - Arizona Cardinals

Javon Harris - Arizona Cardinals

Dominique Whaley - Seattle Seahawks

Tom Wort - Tennessee Titans

Demontre Hurst – Chicago Bears

James Winchester - Green Bay Packers

Jamarkus McFarland - San Diego Chargers

These are the ones that I have seen confirmed, but I am sure more will come out as Sunday progresses.

Congrats to those Sooners who are getting a chance to fulfill their dreams of making it in the bigs.

OU Gymnastics Compete For National Championships

Starting on Friday, the No. 2 ranked Oklahoma Sooners women’s gymnastics team will compete for the NCAA Championship in Los Angles at UCLA.

gymnasThe Sooners, who are coming off a Big 12 Championship, went 19-1 during the season. The semi-finals begin Friday night, Super Six on Saturday and the Individual finals on Sunday.

In the Sooners round of the semis, they will compete against against No. 3-seed Alabama, No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 Michigan, No. 10 Utah and No. 11 Arkansas.

This is the 10th straight year the Sooners have competed in the National Championship.

On the other side of the country, the men’s gymnastics team is doing the same thing – competing for the National Title in State College, PA.

The No. 2 men’s team is competing for their ninth title; their sixth since 2002. They finished the season 18-1 and just like the women, won the Big 12 Championship, which happen to be the 20th time they’ve done so. In the last 12 years, the men’s team haven’t finished below 3rd in the Nation.

Their schedule for the weekend is set up just like the women’s schedule.

Good luck to both teams as they compete to bring championships back home to Norman.

Oklahoma Baseball Ready For Doubleheader

OklahomaSoonersbatsThe Oklahoma Sooners baseball team is playing host to a non-con doubleheader on Tuesday against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.

The doubleheader comes after a series loss last week against the Baylor Bears, 2-1. The Sooners were able to take the second game, but fell short in game three.

The No. 10 Sooners – who are sitting at a 28-8 record – will play their first game at 3:00 at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The second game is set to start at 6:30.

The UALR Trojans are 16-18 on their season. The last time these two teams met was in 2011, with the Sooners taking the three-game series, 2-1. Oklahoma owns the series overall, 21-3.

The games are being broadcast regionally: game one on Fox Sports Southwest, game two on Fox College Sports Central. You can also catch the games on KREF 1400 if you live in the radio broadcast area.

Sooners Baseball Ranked In Top Ten In Three Polls

The Oklahoma Sooners have been doing work this baseball season as the newest polls have them ranked in top ten. Not just one poll, but three.

OklahomaSoonersbatsAfter winning a series against the Texas Longhorns for the first time in 15 years, the Sooners moved themselves up in the polls – eighth in the Collegiate Baseball poll, ninth in Baseball America and are in as a tie for tenth in USA Today/ESPN coaches poll.

The Sooners are 27-6 on the season so far and 7-2 in Big 12 play. For the last several years the Sooners have one time or another been ranked in Baseball America’s top ten but this is the first time since 2011 they have made the cut in all three at one time.

They currently are in first place in the Big 12 and will take on the Baylor Bears for a three-game series this weekend in Waco.

As for the Lady Sooners, the softball team is still sitting at No. 1 in the country and is set to take on Texas Tech in Lubbock starting on the 12th. Their game for Wednesday against North Texas has been cancelled due to the weather.

As of right now, no reschedule has been announced.

Sooner Women Are Sweet Sixteen Bound

One Sooner hoops team is still in the mix as the lady hoopsters make it to the Sweet Sixteen. The Sooners will take on an always  basketball juggernaut, the Tennessee Volunteers.

2013_Final_Four_logo_revealedIt will basically be a home game, as the game happens to be in Oklahoma City. The Sooners beat the Bruins on Monday, 85-72 to advance to Sunday’s match-up against the Vols.

The No. 2-seeded Vols beat Creighton, 68-52 to Monday night to advance their way in.

The winner of Sunday’s game will take on either Louisville or Baylor in the Elite 8, which also play on Sunday.

The game is set to start at 3:55 CST on Sunday and will be aired on ESPN2. The Baylor/Louisville game will immediately follow.

Women’s NCAA Round 2: Sooners To Face UCLA

While most people’s focus has been on the the men’s march madness, the women are also doing their thing this week. The Lady Sooners took on and beat Central Michigan this past weekend in the opening round of the Women’s NCAA tourney.

2013_Final_Four_logo_revealedThey will face the UCLA Bruins on Monday night in Round 2. The No. 3-seeded Bruins and the No. 6-seeded Sooners have faced one-another this season already.

The Bruins came to Norman and beat the Sooners on their home court, 86-80. That was the second game of the season for the Sooners, so quite a bit has changed since then – injuries, growing as a team, etc, etc.

The Bruins, much like the Sooners, were also hit with the injury bug throughout the season. They have only had three players who have been in the line-up consistently all season.

UCLA is coming off a 66-49 win over Stetson in their first round game.

The Sooners/Bruins series is tied at 2-2 all-time. They have never played on a neutral court. Both teams split the series one and one at their respective home courts.

The winner of this game will take on the winner of Creighton and Tennessee who also play on Monday.

Oklahoma Set To Take On San Diego State In Round of 64

March Madness has officially begun and for the Oklahoma Sooners, the big day is on Friday. The Sooners will take on the San Diego State Aztecs in a second round match-up on Friday night in Philadelphia, PA.

Oklahoma_Sooners_-_Basketball_Wallpaper_5b5oThe winner of the game will take on the winner of No. 2 Georgetown and No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast.

Both teams struggled at the end of the season, unsure of whether or not either would have a solid chance of making it in or coming in as a bubble.

This is the Sooners first time back dancing in four years. There is familiarity between these two teams, even if it isn’t because they play. Sooners head coach Lon Kruger has faced the Aztecs several times when he was the head coach at UNLV.

It doesn’t stop at Kruger – one of the Sooners’ star players, Amath M’Baye, is a Wyoming transfer and took on the Aztecs in MWC play during his time there.

These two teams have actually played against each other before, with the Sooners owning the series 3-0.

The Aztecs are being picked by most to win the game, but looking back at their record, they have struggled defensively against quick-offense teams. Advantage to Oklahoma in this respect, as they have the 35th best offense in the country. The Aztecs are also not the most stellar of offensive units. The Sooners will need to keep pressure going and get ahead quickly, but play a slower pace and play methodical.

Every time I have predicted Oklahoma to handle a game with ease, it ends up being polar-opposite. I do think they will have the advantage in this game, but for lucks sake, I won’t say “with ease”.

You’re welcome Sooner Nation.

Game is scheduled to tip-off at 8:20 PM CST, Friday, March 22nd.

Oklahoma Women Hoops Going Dancing, Again

The streak is alive and well as the Oklahoma Sooners women’s basketball team found out on Monday night that they are going dancing for the fourteenth consecutive year.

2013_Final_Four_logo_revealedThe Sooners made it in as No. 6 seed and will face No. 11 seed Central Michigan on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, which is part of the Oklahoma City Regional. UCLA and Stetson are the other two teams playing in Columbus this weekend and will take on the winner of that game for Round 2.

The second game will be played sometime on Monday, with time yet to be determined.

Sooners head coach Sherri Coale:

I’m very excited with a 6 seed and very proud of the representation of the Big 12 Conference in the NCAA Tournament. That’s amazing and, I think, because of the respect the committee had for the league, that’s probably why we got the seed we did.

On the possibility of getting a Sweet 16 spot in Oklahoma City:

That’s maybe the best part of it. I know we have to do big things, tough things before we have the opportunity to come back here, but that’s the lure. That’s the carrot that’s out there. Just win two and you get to come home and anything can happen at home. It’s a really special opportunity.

In 2012, the Sooners went out in Round 2, losing to St. John’s, 74-70 in Norman. For the last seven seasons, the Sooners have advanced past the first round.

Good luck to both Sooners teams – men and women – as their tournament journey’s start this weekend.

Oklahoma Men’s Basketball Going Dancing, Takes On San Diego State

It’s official, the Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team is going dancing. They were selected as a 10-seed in the men’s tournament and will face No. 7-seed San Diego State on Friday, March 22nd.

The Aztecs came in 4th in the Mountain West and finished the season with a 22-10 record. The Sooners finished the season withOklahoma_Sooners_-_Basketball_Wallpaper_5b5o the same 20-11 record.

The Big 12 as a conference ended up sending 5 teams — with Kansas going as a No. 1 seed. Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State were the other teams selected. So, fifty percent of the conference is headed to the big show.

Head coach Lon Kruger is now the only Div. I coach in history to send five different teams to the NCAA tourney. According to SoonerSports.com, Kruger led Kansas State, Florida, Illinois and UNLV all to at least one NCAA Tournament win, guided K-State to the 1988 Elite Eight, Florida to the 1994 Final Four and UNLV to the 2007 Sweet 16.

The Sooners have faced SDSU three times before, with a 3-0 record against them.

Three Oklahoma Sooners Named to All-Big 12 Team

The Big 12 conference announced on Saturday their All-Big 12 men’s basketball teams and three Oklahoma Sooners made the cut.

Amath M’Baye, Steven Pledger and Romero Osby were all three named to the team with Osby being selected to the first-team. Oklahoma_Sooners_-_Basketball_Wallpaper_5b5oBoth M’Baye and Pledger were selected for third-team. Osby is the first Sooner to be selected to the conference first-team since Blake Griffin in 2009.

Osby led the Sooners in scoring in 13 of the 18 Big 12 games they played in. Osby hit 20 points six times in Big 12 play, and had at least 26 points three times.  He scored a career-high 31 points Feb. 27 against Texas.

M’Baye averaged 10-points and 5.3 rebounds a game to rank third and second on the team. M’Baye received Rookie of the Week honors twice from the Big 12 this season.

Pledger ranks second on the team with 12-points per game. He is also the best perimeter shooter the Sooners have on the roster. Pledger also ranks in second of all-time when it comes to the three-point range, averaging 16-points per game in the last seven games of the season.

The Big 12 tournament starts this week in Kansas City and the Sooners are entering in as a four-seed. They will take on Iowa State first, who is a five-seed on Thursday morning at 11:30 CST.
