For the second year in a row, Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones makes an appearance on the Davey O’Brien watch list. The award is
given out to the best quarterback in college football.
Seven quarterbacks on the list were also on the 2011 watch list: Matt Barkley (USC), Tajh Boyd (Clemson), Keith Price (Washington), Tyler Wilson (Arkansas), Landry Jones (Oklahoma), Denard Robinson (Michigan) and Seth Doege (Texas Tech). None of whom were much of a surprise being listed. A quarterback does not need to be on the watch list in order to win the award at the end of the year.
The list is chosen by the year prior’s stats and current expectations going into the current year. Other Big XII quarterbacks who made an appearance on the list besides Jones and Doege were: Collin Klein (KSU), Casey Pachall (TCU) and Geno Smith (WVU). My money is on Matt Barkley, Landry Jones, Tyler Wilson and Geno Smith to still be on the list out the ones I mentioned when the field is narrowed to sixteen quarterbacks in late October.
Sooners that have won the Davey O’Brien: Sam Bradford (2008) and Jason White (2003, 2004).
On Tuesday, Landry was also nominated for the AFCA Good Works team. The award is given out to college football players who are committed to making an impact in their communities.
As we move along in the college football watch list announcements, up next we will have the Doak Walker Award.
