Don’t Get Jealous Sooners: New Texas Longhorn Football Uniforms?

These new trainwreck uniforms have been floating around the internet as possibly the new uniforms for the Texas Longhorns for the 2012 season. I’m not sure who told them it was a good idea, but Daddy DeLoss needs to lose these and fast. You don’t need to fix what isn’t broke..The team needs help but the uniforms were just fine. The athletic department certainly isn’t living up to the phrase, “Dont Mess With Texas.” Someone clearly did. And its bad.

Hopefully for the Horns, these are just concept. Who am I kidding, no I don’t.

Please wear these in Dallas for Red River. The fancy burnt orange one, please.

Sooners Spring Practice Back In Full Swing

After being off for a week due to Spring Break, the Sooners are back on the practice field. They will have their second team scrimmage this coming Saturday, following the three practices this week. Friday’s practice will mark the 9th practice out the 15 they are allotted.

Coach Stoops was on KREF Sportstalk 1400 yesterday with Dusty Dvoracek and Teddy Lehman, discussing progress of team. He mentioned that Stacy McGee has missed a few practices and in typical Stoops fashion, did not mention why. He also got to drop one of his favorite words, “special” when mentioning Trey Metoyer, saying he is very impressed with how well and how quickly he has found his place. He praised his brother Mike’s return and saying the transition back into Norman has gone very well, obviously.

He also said that Coach Kish is fitting in well, and the players are taking to him nicely. He mentioned Corey Nelson and Aaron Franklin as possible leaders to take over with Travis Lewis’ departure. On replacing Ryan Broyles, he said he doesn’t necessarily think they will have a go-to guy, but will be utilizing everyone more often. As Teddy and Dusty mentioned, it is a very positive thing to hear Stoops praise the younger guys and hearing that they are stepping up in effort.

In related news, Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium may be getting a face-lift in the near future. The University of Oklahoma board of regents is scheduled to vote on an improvement plan Thursday morning, which would include improvements to East side suites, the Kerr McGee Stadium Club and the Santee Lounge. No word on whether or not they are ever going to close off the South endzone side; which would be logical. If the improvements are approved, which they are expected to be without question, they will be completed between the 2012-2013 seasons.

Sooner Gymnastics No. 1 Seed For NCAA Regional

The Sooner Women’s Gymnastic team has been selected as the No. 1 seed in the Regional to be held in Champaign, Illinois on April 7th. The other No. 1 seeds include: UCLA, Nebraska, Georgia and Alabama. The Sooners finished the season 19-3 and No. 2 in the country.

They will compete in the Regional against Illinois, Denver, Stanford, Kentucky and Illinois-Chicago.  The top two from the Regional will move on to the Championship in Georgia, which will be held April 20-22.

The Sooners have won 4 Big XII Championships out of the last 5 under head coach, K.J. Kindler. Coach Kindler is the Big XII coach of the year, while Junior Brie Olson was named Big XII All-Around Champion. Senior Megan Ferguson was named Big XII Specialist of the Year.

The Regional is scheduled to start at 4:00 PM, April 7th at the University of Illinois. You can view the Regional Draw Results HERE.

*In other news, the football team is back on the field this week after Spring Break, so more football news should be coming in soon.*

Short-Time Sooner Brandon Wegher Arrested

Brandon Wegher mugshot

Running Back Brandon Wegher has been arrested for assault in Iowa. Wegher was with the Sooners for a short time last year and decided that Oklahoma wasn’t for him. Before that, he was at the University of Iowa. He started to attend classes at Western Iowa after his departure from Oklahoma, but was ruled in-eligible. He was released from his scholarship from Iowa due to ‘personal reasons’.

The assault was apparently on his brother, who was attempting to move out the apartment they shared. Wegher pushed his brother, Cole, who struck his head on the kitchen counter. Cole didn’t suffer from major injuries but was obviously mad enough to file charges against Brandon.

His trial date is set for April 16th. He was released without bail and his brother asked for a protection order against him. When your own family does stuff like this, you have issues.

What a downfall this kid has had, he went from rushing for a freshman record at Iowa with 641 yards and 8 touchdowns to assaulting his own family members. Looks like losing Brandon Wegher was actually a good thing. Doesn’t look like he will be playing football for anyone, anytime soon.

Dewey Selmon Inducted Into Oklahoma Sports Hall Of Fame

Today, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced the induction of the third Selmon brother to be enshrined. Dewey will be joining his brothers Lee Roy and Lucious to the list of amazing athletes that have come out of the state of Oklahoma.

From left:Lee Roy, Lucious and Dewey Selmon

For those of you that don’t know who Dewey Selmon is, first off, why? Secondly, he was a former Sooner All-American who went on to play in the pros for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Diego Chargers.

Between Dewey and Lee Roy, they were considered to be the best defensive lineman to play the game in their prime. The brothers played on two Sooner National Championship teams, 1974 and 1975. In 1976, Dewey went in the second round of the draft to play along side Lee Roy in Tampa

The Selmon family is part of Oklahoma sports lore and will always be known as some of the best to wear the Crimson and Cream. A very deserved place for Dewey. Congrats, it was a long time coming.

Sooner Women Beat Michigan, Move On To Round 2

The Sooner Women hoops team dominated the Michigan Wolverines Sunday night in the first round of the women’s NCAA Tournament. Aaryn Ellenberg had an outstanding 28 points, hitting 10 3-pointers. Ellenberg had limited playing time in the first half due to foul trouble, but came out firing on all cylinders in the 2nd, scoring 13 of the Sooners first 14 points.

The Sooner defense held the Wolverines to only one basket over a 5 minute span and were never down. The closest it was at one point was an 8-point lead. Whitney Hand also had a great night for the Sooners, scoring 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

The Wolverines’ lead scorer, Carmen Reynolds, put them the closest they had been all night to catching up with the Sooners, by hitting 3 3-pointers to make the score 66-58. Reynolds ended up scoring 20 points, and their normal high scorer, Rachel Sheffer, was held to three.

The leader board for the game:

Stat  Oklahoma  Michigan
 Points  Ellenberg (28)  Reynolds (20)
 Rebounds  Hand (10)  Ryan (8)
 Assists  Hand (6)  Ryan (7)
 Steals  4 Players (2)  4 Players (1)
 Blocks  Griffin (2)  2 Players (1)

The win pushed the Sooners to 8-1 at home during the NCAA tournament. The last time they lost, they were the lower-seeded team. This same scenario will be played out Tuesday night, when Oklahoma will be taking on No. 3 seed St. John’s.

Sooners Ready To Start Road To Women’s Final Four

The No. 6 Sooners, who are in the Fresno Region of the tournament, will host No. 11 Michigan in Norman at the Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday. The winner will advance to play either Creighton or St. John’s in the second round game scheduled for Tuesday.

The Wolverines are in the women’s tournament for the first time in over a decade to face a Sooner team who has experience and quite a bit more depth. If/When the Sooners win on Sunday, they will most likely be playing St. John’s. The same St. John’s team who broke the amazing 99 win home-court streak held by UConn.

Sooner players to keep an eye on are Whitney Hand and Aaryn Ellenberg. Ellenberg is the Sooners leading scorer, averaging 15.4 ppg. Michigan’s Jenny Ryan leads the Wolverines in rebounds, steals and assists and averages 6.9 ppg. She was also named to the B1G’s All-Defensive team.

Sooner head coach, Sherri Coale said about the Wolverines:

Just scrappy. They play really tough man defense and share the ball really well. They don”t have a go-to play but they move the ball well. They seem to be really tough.

You can check out the Sooners road to the Final Four here, with complete bracket coverage and tv schedule.

The tip-off against Michigan is scheduled for 6:30 PM CST on ESPN2.

Sooners Work To Impress NFL Scouts

Wednesday was Pro Day in Norman and several Sooners got a chance to show the NFL scouts what they are made of.

Ryan Reynolds

It was good to see Ryan Reynolds, who played for the Sooners from 2005-2009. Reynolds, a linebacker, suffered several knee injuries during his Sooner career. In 2009 after the NCAA denied his request to come back for a 6th year, he stated he was not interested in continuing his football career in the NFL. He had a change of heart, and today looked to be in great shape.

Cameron Kenney, another former Sooner from the class of 2010, also performed today for the scouts. if you don’t remember, Kenney was a JUCO WR transfer from Garden City CC and was ranked the No. 3 JUCO WR and No. 16 JUCO player in the Nation by Rivals.com in 2007.

If you are wondering who Jesse Bell is, you are looking in the wrong place. Honestly, I have never heard of the guy before Sooner Pro day. And when I researched him to find some stats or more information. All I found out was that he was a DB.

From the footage that I actually got to watch, it looked like Travis Lewis improved some since the combine; still wasn’t stellar, though. Dejuan Miller had a decent day along with Sam Proctor and James Winchester. As expected, several Sooners did not participate in the drills, like Ryan Broyles and Donald Stephenson.

The NFL draft is coming up April 26-28 and for these Sooner hopefuls, it’s now a waiting game.

Sooners Host NFL Scouts On Wednesday

James Hanna at th 2011 Fiesta Bowl

Tomorrow, the Sooners will be hosting NFL reps from around the country in the annual Sooners Pro Day at the Everest Indoor Training Center. Sooners that are scheduled to work-out tomorrow are: James Winchester, Donald Stephenson, Ryan Reynolds, Trent Ratterree, Sam Proctor, Dejuan Miller, Travis Lewis, Ronnell Lewis, Jarvis Jones, Cameron Kenney, James Hanna, Stephen Good, Ryan Broyles, Jamell Flemming, Frank Alexander and Jesse Bell.

The players will be tested on basically the same thing that they are tested on during the NFL Combine, but gives players that were not invited the opportunity to show the scouts something. You can watch the Sooners Pro Day live on SoonerSports.com tomorrow starting at 9 AM.

Out of the players that are partcipating, I can’t wait to see Frank Alexander, James Hanna, Ronnell Lewis and Jamell Fleming preform. Travis Lewis will really need to step it up to impress the scouts.

Will have complete coverage of Pro Day starting tomorrow morning.
