The Sooners swept the double-elimination regional bracket, which was being held in Norman.  They beat Marist 17-0, Arkansas 10-5 and then played Arky again for the Finals of the bracket. It is the sixth time in the past seven years the Sooners have made it past the regional round.

The Sooners took the game over with a run-rule (which is an 8-run lead after the fifth). The Razorbacks played in error-filled game (36-20);  only five of the Sooners 14 runs were earned. Yikes.

Sooners’ Shoate Inducted Into College Football Hall of Fame

In what ended up being a pretty good class for the 2013 College Football Hall of Fame, former Oklahoma Sooner Rod Shoate shoatemade this year’s cut.

The three-time All-American linebacker played from 1972-1974. From SoonerSports.com:

Shoate was a three-time All-America pick as a linebacker for the Sooners from 1972-74. He earned consensus First Team All-America honors in 1973 and was a unanimous pick in 1974 when the Sooners claimed the national championship under head coach Barry Switzer. A two-time Big Eight Defensive Player of Year, he finished seventh in the 1974 Heisman Trophy voting. Shoate concluded his career with 420 tackles, the third-highest total in school history.

Shoate went on to play for the New England Patriots for six seasons before heading to the USFL to play for the New Jersey Generals. He finished his pro career with the Memphis Showboats.

He unfortunately passed away in 1999 so is unable to see the impact he had as a player recognized by the National Football Foundation.

The rest of the players being honored this year are:

Ted Brown – TB, North Carolina State (1975-78)
Tedy Bruschi – DE, Arizona (1992-95)
Ron Dayne- RB, Wisconsin (1996-99)

Sooners Win Big 12 Rowing Championship

via SoonerSports.com

The sport of rowing is still in it’s infancy at the University of Oklahoma – this is their fifth season with a team. But that didn’t stop the No. 20 women’s rowing team from taking home a Big 12 Championship this past weekend.

The championship took place at Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kansas. The Sooners rowed their way to wins in the final three races to help secure the Championship from the Texas Longhorns.

The Big 12 only has five teams competing in rowing (OU, Kansas, Texas, Kansas State and West Virginia) so they are one shy of having an auto-qualifier for the NCAA Championship. So that means the Sooners will compete in the Conference USA Championship that is being held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in two weeks.

The CUSA championship winner will get a chance to compete in the NCAA National Rowing Championship. The National Championship is scheduled for May 31st –  June 2nd at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Oklahoma Sooners Baseball Need To Finish Out With Sweeps

OklahomaSoonersbatsWith only about three weeks left until the Big 12 Championship, the Oklahoma Sooners baseball team (34-12, 11-5 Big 12 play) are looking to finish out the rest of the regular season with sweeps.

The Sooners, who are currently in West Virginia, took game one in their last series against the Mountaineers on Friday night, 4-3. In took 10 innings to get it done. The Mountaineers are 27-20 and 9-7 in Big 12 play on the season. Due to their pitching, they have come on strong in the later part of the season.

After the series in West Virginia, the Sooners move on to play Bedlam against Oklahoma State (32-12, 7-8 Big 12 play) in a three-game series that kicks-off in Tulsa and will finish the last two games in Oklahoma City.

They will close out the season with Kansas State (33-14, 10-6 Big 12 play) in Manhattan, KS. The Wildcats have slowly been threatening to take the No. 1 spot in the conference from the Sooners over the last couple of weeks.

Oklahoma will most likely go into the tournament sitting in the No. 1 spot but need to finish the season strong going in.

The conference championship is scheduled for may 22nd-26th in Oklahoma City.

Fourteen Oklahoma Sooners Headed To NFL Camps

OU-LogoThe NFL draft is now complete, with six former Oklahoma Sooners being drafted. Some of the draft picks came to a surprise to many keeping close watch on the events.

Here is a list of drafted Sooners:

Lane Johnson – Round 1 – Philadelphia Eagles – pick 4

Landry Jones –  Round 4 - Pittsburgh Steelers – pick 115

Kenny Stills – Round 5 – New Orleans Saints – pick 144

Justin Brown – Round 6 – Pittsburgh Steelers – pick 185

Stacy McGee – Round 6 – Oakland Raiders – pick 205

David King – Round 7 – Philadelphia Eagles – pick 239

My player that came as a surprise was Stacy McGee going at all. I figured he would get a free agency pick-up, but with all his off the field issues, I wasn’t sure if teams would view him as a risk. Still, good for him. Hopefully this is his chance to turn things around. Surprise not drafted? Tony Jefferson. I think he was just as surprised as the rest of Sooner Nation.

Free-Agency pick-ups:

Tress Way - Chicago Bears

Tony Jefferson - Arizona Cardinals

Javon Harris - Arizona Cardinals

Dominique Whaley - Seattle Seahawks

Tom Wort - Tennessee Titans

Demontre Hurst – Chicago Bears

James Winchester - Green Bay Packers

Jamarkus McFarland - San Diego Chargers

These are the ones that I have seen confirmed, but I am sure more will come out as Sunday progresses.

Congrats to those Sooners who are getting a chance to fulfill their dreams of making it in the bigs.

OU Gymnastics Compete For National Championships

Starting on Friday, the No. 2 ranked Oklahoma Sooners women’s gymnastics team will compete for the NCAA Championship in Los Angles at UCLA.

gymnasThe Sooners, who are coming off a Big 12 Championship, went 19-1 during the season. The semi-finals begin Friday night, Super Six on Saturday and the Individual finals on Sunday.

In the Sooners round of the semis, they will compete against against No. 3-seed Alabama, No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 Michigan, No. 10 Utah and No. 11 Arkansas.

This is the 10th straight year the Sooners have competed in the National Championship.

On the other side of the country, the men’s gymnastics team is doing the same thing – competing for the National Title in State College, PA.

The No. 2 men’s team is competing for their ninth title; their sixth since 2002. They finished the season 18-1 and just like the women, won the Big 12 Championship, which happen to be the 20th time they’ve done so. In the last 12 years, the men’s team haven’t finished below 3rd in the Nation.

Their schedule for the weekend is set up just like the women’s schedule.

Good luck to both teams as they compete to bring championships back home to Norman.

Sooners Baseball Ranked In Top Ten In Three Polls

The Oklahoma Sooners have been doing work this baseball season as the newest polls have them ranked in top ten. Not just one poll, but three.

OklahomaSoonersbatsAfter winning a series against the Texas Longhorns for the first time in 15 years, the Sooners moved themselves up in the polls – eighth in the Collegiate Baseball poll, ninth in Baseball America and are in as a tie for tenth in USA Today/ESPN coaches poll.

The Sooners are 27-6 on the season so far and 7-2 in Big 12 play. For the last several years the Sooners have one time or another been ranked in Baseball America’s top ten but this is the first time since 2011 they have made the cut in all three at one time.

They currently are in first place in the Big 12 and will take on the Baylor Bears for a three-game series this weekend in Waco.

As for the Lady Sooners, the softball team is still sitting at No. 1 in the country and is set to take on Texas Tech in Lubbock starting on the 12th. Their game for Wednesday against North Texas has been cancelled due to the weather.

As of right now, no reschedule has been announced.
