The New York Yankees will come to the Trop this weekend to face the Tampa Bay Rays. Today, Boston pitcher Ryan Dempster was suspended for five games after throwing at Alex Rodriguez on Sunday. The Yankees aren’t too satisfied with the suspension – Dempster was suspended for five games and is unlikely to miss a start. New York’s manager Joe Girardi said:
I think when you talk about suspensions, if you suspend a position player three games, he misses three games. You can suspend a pitcher five games, even six games, and he might not miss a start if the off days come into play. That’s why I think everything has to be taken into account when you make a suspension. Not just in this case; all the time.
While Girardi may worry about the message the suspension sends, he shouldn’t have to worry about Rays pitchers throwing at Rodriguez. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said of the situation:
You know what, vigilante justice and unilateral decisions, I’m not into that stuff.
The Rays came out on top in last night’s game against the Orioles, barely. Alex Cobb is on the hill tonight for Tampa Bay in just his second start since returning from a concussion. The Rays struck first, with Matt Joyce scoring on a single from Yunel Escobar in the top of the second.
While the Rays are at home this weekend, the Rays Wives will hold their third annual Mystery Ball. Don’t worry, you don’t need to get all dressed up. Just be ready to buy an autographed ball or silent auction item on August 24 if you want to get involved. Proceeds will benefit All Children’s Hospital.
