Apparently the Orioles are shopping Kevin Gregg and Mark Reynolds. Yeah, good luck with that, Orioles. Like anyone’s going to want Kevin Gregg.
I can see the appeal of Reynolds to people despite his error count at third base, but his walks and his strikeouts aren’t as bad as we initially anticipated they’d be and the Orioles need corner infielders. Chris Davis can play third base, sure, but until the prospects we’ve got on the way (Joe Mahoney, etc.) are ready to take their places at the corners, we’ll need to hang on to Reynolds. I’m not sure why the organization thinks moving him is a good idea at this time – I am personally of the opinion that you hang on to a filler player until the prospect is ready to take his place as the rightful owner of the position.
Now on the Kevin Gregg front, let’s just get rid of him and eat his salary. I really don’t care admitting the organization made a mistake there. If we get rid of Gregg, though, that makes it sound like we’ll be having a closer free-for-all until somebody decides to rise above the status of ‘closer by committee’ and stand out as the official team door-shutter. Personally, I can see the job going to Jim Johnson for the time being, especially given his much-improved 2011. We’ve also got some prospects in the pitching department who are on the up and up, which is a good sign.
On the one hand, this news tells me the organization has faith in the prospects coming in the near future. On the other hand, why now, at least with Reynolds? I just don’t get it.
Just get rid of Gregg, though. Seriously. Do it.
