Providence Profiles: Michael Hutchinson

For the first time in the Providence Profiles, we’re featuring a goal tender. This week is all about Canadian goalie Michael Hutchinson. 22-year-old Hutchinson was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 3rd round (77 overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Since then he has spent the majority of the time with the Providence Bruins as well as the Bruins ECHL affiliate Reading Royals.

Hutchinson made his AHL debut October 8th of the 2010-2011 season and the next night in his second game notched his first professional save. Not soon after did he record a seven game win streak (5-0-0, 15 GA, 174 SV). That season Hutchinson was assigned and reassigned between the P-Bruins and the Royals.

Eventually in April of 2011, Hutchinson would be called up to the NHL. One year later March 3, 2012, Hutchinson was recalled once again to be a back up goalie because of an injured Tuukka Rask. That second call up was one day after his 22nd birthday; talk about a happy birthday!

This season Hutchinson has started in 6 games for the Providence Bruins and has yet to notch his first save of the season. His current GAA is 3.48. I think that Hutchinson has the potential to do great thing for the Providence Bruins. Is he NHL material? Well that has yet to be determined. But for now I and all other Providence fans can just eagerly await Hutchinson’s first save for the 2012-2013 season.

If you’d like to watch Hutchinson get involved in some fighting action watch below:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Znmkh5s-xo&feature=youtu.be
But if you’d prefer something milder, you can watch him and fellow goaltender Niklas Svedberg talk about his goalie equipment. Your choice of course!
