Bye Bye Birdies: FIU Beats FAU In Shula Bowl X

This was a must win for FIU and they got it. FIU beat FAU 41-7 Saturday night at FIU Stadium. This marks the first win against FAU since 2005.

This game was bittersweet, however. It meant saying “See ya later” to the Seniors, including T.Y. Hilton, Wes CarrollDarriet Perry, Curtis Bryant, and Jonathan Faucher, just to name a few. It was also rather different since the starting QB was not Carroll, but Jake Medlock. It was FIU’s best kept secret this week. I remember looking over one section to my friend, Mike, who looked at me and mouthed, “Medlock?!” I just shrugged because I had no clue why they decided to start Medlock. But, obviously the plan worked for the Panthers.

Hilton scored on an amazing 97-yard punt return, which marks the longest punt return in school history. Senior, Michael Cal kicked an extra point for FIU. A bit of trivia for you, Cal was with FAU when they won the conference title and Little Caeser’s Bowl. He was with us last year when we did the same.

Great win, Panthers. Now the winless Owls know how we felt some years ago. I am glad to have that Shula Bowl trophy back at FIU!
