It was a season for the books, one the Edmonton Oil Kings officially wrapped up with an awards night and a special recognition ceremony from the city of Edmonton.

Captain Mark Pysyk was named the Oil Kings Top Defenseman for the fourth year in a row, along with being given the title of Humanitarian of the Year. Curtis Lazar and Martin Gernat were named Top Rookies; Rhett Rachinski, who has reached the end of his WHL career, was given the Scholastic Player of the Year award along with the Blue Willow Unsung Hero Award. Michael St. Croix picked up the Greg Tomalty Memorial Award for MVP and the Top Scorer award (to recognize his 105 points).

Edmonton Oil Kings: 2012 WHL Champions!

I'm not under the impression that this is a good quality photo. But can't we ignore that and enjoy watching Captain Mark Pysyk hoisting the Cup? (photo belongs to me)

 

Goals in the first and final two minutes of the opening period were the exact motivation the Edmonton Oil Kings needed to get their momentum going for Game Seven. Add two more second period goals and a stunning goaltender who only allowed one himself, and what do you get?

The Ed Chynoweth Cup and a trip to the Memorial Cup tournament.
