Schultz Signs

Happy yet? (photo: WisconsinAthletics/youtube.com)

Everybody wanted him, we got him. 21-year-old defenseman Justin Schultz was one of the most sought-after free agents coming into the NHL this season; now he’s decided to come to Edmonton on a two year, entry level contract that’s worth $925,000. The signing bonus will be $92,500 and his bonuses can get him a cap hit of $3.755 million US dollars.

Not bad.

This morning, the Oilers Twitter announced that Kevin Lowe and Steve Tambellini have reached an agreement on a new contract for the Oilers GM.

“Three years ago we asked Steve to begin a rebuild which we all know hasn’t been easy. However, Oilers fans can take some consolation in the fact that Steve and his staff have acquired some amazing talent which will most definitely be the cornerstone to future sustained success for the Edmonton Oilers.” Says Lowe.

Jordan Eberle Nominated for Lady Byng

Eberle talks to the media after finding out he'd been nominated for the Lady Byng Trophy. (photo: screenshot/NHL.com. Again.)

There’s something to be said about someone who can rack up 76 points and only serve 10 penalty minutes over the course of 78 games. That something is “Hey, you deserve a nomination for the Lady Byng Trophy!” That’s exactly why Jordan Eberle’s headed to Las Vegas for the NHL Awards, hopefully to get his name engraved on the trophy. Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri both won it, when they had over a hundred points each and 20-30 penalty minutes back in the 80’s. Matt Moulson of the New York Islanders and Brian Campbell of the Florida Panthers are the other two nominations who are up against Eberle for the award.

Aerys predicted Eberle as one of the nominees this year, and I’ll be putting my money (no, not actually, I’m too young to gamble) on him to win it.

Nuge For Calder

Aw, c'mon, man. Smile, you're a Calder finalist! (photo: screenshot/NHL.com)

18-34-52. It took him 62 games to get to that point – or should I say, points? – tied with Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche. I know, I know. I talk about this kid too much, but how could I not? I’m betting on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins becoming a huge superstar in the next few years, so I might as well prove that sooner than later.
He may not have won the rookie scoring race (Since Landeskog had more goals than Nugent-Hopkins, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, I guess) but Nugent-Hopkins was recently named a finalist for the Calder Trophy, which is given each year to the league’s top rookie.
