Lady Byng runner-up Jordan Eberle and Calder runner-up Ryan Nugent-Hopkins came away from the NHL awards just that – runner-ups. The voters, the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, gave their majority vote to Brian Campbell over Eberle – 582 to 512. The Nuge received 1,001 votes while winner Gabriel Landeskog got 1,383. Both boys made sure to express how honoured they were just to be nominated for each awards; being so young and being recognized so highly isn’t something you just brush off, you know.
“It’s just an honour to be nominated,” Eberle said, “at such a young age, only my second year.”
And though Nugent-Hopkins didn’t win the Calder Trophy, he was named to the NHL’s 2011-2012 All-Rookie team, so it’s not like he wasn’t noticed, or anything.
“I was cheering for him,” Eberle said of Ryan. “I don’t think he can be disappointed. He had an amazing season. To step in and do what he did, it’s very impressive.”
“It’s a big honour for me to be nominated, but congrats to Gabriel.” Nugent-Hopkins said in his post-awards interview. “I’m pretty good friends with him, he’s a great guy and deserves all the best.”
“Ryan would have won it if he didn’t get hurt,” Landeskog added. “I think Adam (Henrique, from the NJ Devils) could have won it, too, if you counted the post-season. They’re two great players and two great guys.”
Both boys are looking forward to hopefully being back with nominations in the future.
“It would really cool if I got the chance to go up for another award, no matter what the award was,” Nugent-Hopkins said. Ugh, knock on wood, nobody wants to be nominated for the Masterton, okay?
I really can’t leave this at the Awards though, because Jordan and Ryan got up to so many shenanigans in Las Vegas that it wasn’t even – actually, it was really funny.

The boys got to go behind the scenes of a Cirque de Soleil performance while in Vegas, getting to learn the choreography and climb around like monkeys.

Who's going to win? My bet's on Eberle. (photo: Lainey Gossip/twitter. I think.)
This even happened:

And that’s just what was caught on camera. The boys also visited the Las Vegas Speedway earlier on to race some Ferraris and donned these not-so-skintight suits:

Thankfully, they didn’t flip any cars. We’re gonna need those guys next season.
