Edmonton Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini announced that his club has extended qualifying offers to the following RFA’s: Devan Dubnyk, Sam Gagner, Linus Omark, Theo Peckham, Jeff Petry, Alex Plante and Chris VandeVelde.
This leaves…
Cam Barker, Hunter Tremblay and Milan Kytnar as the remaining RFA’s in the Oilers’ system. Ryan Smyth, Darcy Hordichuk, Taylor Chorney, Yann Danis, Ryan Keller, Josh Green and Bryan Rodney are all now UFA’s who haven’t received offers. (At least, none that have been announced. Because you know how NHL teams are with this stuff.)
The Oilers also added seven new faces to the system at the 2012 NHL Draft on June 22nd and 23rd. In addition to taking Nail Yakupov first overall, they picked Mitch Moroz, Jujhar Khaira, Daniil Zharkov, Erik Gustafsson, Joey Laleggia and John McCarron. I think it’s safe to say I couldn’t pronounce any of those names, even if I tried. Except McCarron – simple enough.
Moroz, who played for the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL, was ranked 72nd overall by central scouting and ended up going 32nd overall (2nd round). The Oilers had two picks in the third round; Jujhar Khaira, who played for the Prince George Spruce Kings in the BCHL and Daniil Zharkov, who played for the Belleville Bulls in the OHL. In the fourth round, they picked up Erik Gustafsson from Djurgårdens IF in Sweden. Their fifth-round choice was Joey Laleggia from the University of Denver before taking John McCarron from Cornell University in the sixth.
The 2012 Development Camp – Rookie Camp, if you will – starts on June 27th and goes until July 2nd. 34 of the Oilers’ top prospects will attend the camp, including all of their 2012 Draft picks.
