Kurt Suzuki Hits Second Home Run In Japan, But A’s Still Lose

Hanshin Tigers: 12   Athletics: 6

The pitching was not nearly as sharp as it was in their first exhibition game, in fact they gave up 12 more hits, 12 more runs and 4 more walks than their first game.  This was the final exhibition game before their series against the Mariners, so maybe they were just getting it out of their system…?

Lines of the Day:

  • Evan Scribner: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB.  Scribner was the only pitcher (besides Schlichting who recorded the last out in the eighth) to not allow a run.
  • Kurt Suzuki: 2 AB, 1 H, 1 R, 3 RBI.  Kurt Suzuki hit his second home run of the day, at least in our time zone and his 3 RBI lifted his daily total to 5.

Ugly Lines of Day:

  • Tyson Ross: 4 IP, 10 H, 8 R (6 earned), 1 BB, 1 strikeout.   Tyson Ross did the exact opposite of what Tom Milone did in his start and I am pretty sure that he’s happy that these games don’t mean anything.
  • Andrew Carignan: .2 IP, 3 H, 3 R (3 earned), 2 BB.  After retiring the first two batters, Carignan allowed a single, a walk, a single, a walk and a single, which led to three runs and him needing to be relieved by Travis Schlichting.

A’s Extras:

  • There were 3 errors in this game, Kila Ka’aihue committed 2 and Cliff Pennington committed 1.
  • Bob Melvin says he is leaning towards starting Brandon Allen at first base on opening night, but Susan Slusser tweets that Melvin is considering using two different first basemen in the series.
  • The A’s also announced that Wes Timmons, Evan Scribner and Travis Schlichting will not be on the roster for the series.

The A’s get an off day before their Opening Night series against the Mariners, the game will begin on Wednesday at 3:10 AM (PST).  The probable pitchers for the game are (RHP) Brandon McCarthy and (RHP) Felix Hernandez.

A’s Fall To Royals In Last Spring Game

Royals:  8  Athletics:  3

This was not exactly a way I would like the A’s to end their Spring Training, but over all they ended with a 14-5 record (and two ties) while leaving for Japan as the sole owner of first place of the Cactus League, so I can’t be TOO upset.

Lines of the Day:

  • Evan Scribner: 2 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 Strikeout.  Scribner finishes his Spring with a 1.64 ERA allowing 8 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks and 9 strikeouts over 11 innings of work.
  • Jemile Weeks: 4 AB, 2 H, 0 errors.  After going 0-4 yesterday, committing two errors and making the “ugly” lines of the day, Weeks had a bounce back day at the plate and on the field.

Ugly Lines of the Day:

  • Graham Godfrey: 3 IP, 6 H, 3 Runs (3 Earned), 1 BB, 1 Strikeout.  Not a great day for Godfrey, but it could have been worse.
  • Travis Schlichting: 1/3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB.  This was Schlichting’s shortest outing of Spring, he had only allowed 3 runs in his previous 11.1 innings.
A’s Extras:
    • Coco Crisp was scratched from the lineup today, and played in the minor league game instead.
    • Scott Sizemore underwent surgery today on his torn ACL and it sounds like everything went well, the doctor who preformed the surgery expects him to be ready to play again by next season.
    • Bullpen hopeful, Jordan Norberto, pitched 1 inning today, he gave up 2 hits, 1 earned run and 1 walk

You can see the Royals recap here at Drinking the Royals Blue-Aid.

The team leaves for Japan tomorrow and they will have two exhibition games on March 25th before Opening Day on the 28th.  The first game begins at 3:10 AM PST and Tom Milone will take on the Yomiuri Giants, the second game is at 8:10 PM PST and Tyson Ross will be facing the Hanshin Tigers.
