A’s Acquire Stephen Drew From Diamondbacks

The A’s announced tonight that they have acquired SS Stephen Drew from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor league infielder Sean Jamieson.  The A’s were linked to the 29-year old last month, but no deal was ever made before the trade deadline.

Stephen Drew broke his ankle last June and did not return to the Diamondbacks until June 27 of this year.  Over 40 games Stephen Drew has seen 155 plate appearances and has a .193/.290/.311 slash line with a .265 wOBA, a 57 wRC+ and a -0.1 WAR.  Drew also has 2 HR, 12 RBI and 8 2B during that time.

Sean Jamison, who was drafted by the A’s in the 17th round of last year’s draft, has played in 118 games for the Burlington Bees this season.  Over 540 plate appearances he has a .234/.343/.379 slash line with a .344 wOBA and 112 wRC+.

I don’t think this is necessarily a bad move for the A’s, who could really use some help in the middle infield.  He came at a cheap price and if he doesn’t perform well it’s not a huge loss.  Drew is eligible for free agency next season, but does have a $10 million mutual option for the 2013 season.

There has been no announcement as to what his role will be on the team, but I would assume he would get the bulk of the playing time at short.
