We have Saints football! Or at least the best we’re going to get for the next couple of weeks. The Saints beat the Chiefs in Week 1 of the preseason, 17-13, on Friday.
Sean Payton back on the sideline for the first time since his season-long suspension. The Saints first team offense only produced a FG by Garrett Hartley in the second quarter, and the Saints were down 10-3 at the half.
The Saints backups managed to stage a comeback. QB 2 Luke McCown led the Saints in passing. McCown was 18/28, 1 INT, 216 yards, and two touchdowns.
The competition for the third wide receiver spot is underway. Nick Toon was the Saints leading receiving (4 receptions for 66 yards), but it was Preston Parker who scored twice on two yard passes from McCown. Receiver Andy Tanner had three receptions for 59 yards.
The Saints leading rushers were rookie RB Khiry Robinson (52 yards) and Travaris Cadet (40 yards).
And the “new” Saints 3-4 defense under the direction of Rob Ryan? They gave up 215 yards and a single TD. Promising start…
QB Alex Smith led the Chiefs in passing (completing 7/8 for 68 yards). Former Saints QB 2 Chase Daniel led the Chiefs in rushing (14 yards). Jamaal Charles had 13 yards and the Chiefs only TD of the game.
The Saints players have tomorrow off, and they return to camp for closed practice on Sunday. The Saints host the Raiders on Friday, August 16 for Week 2 of the preseason.
