New Orleans Saints beat Oakland Raiders, 28-20

The Saints beat the Oakland Raiders, 28-20, on Friday night. The Saints jumped to an early 23-0 lead in the second game of the preseason, but costly errors by Saints backups kept the game within Raider reach.

Drew Brees led the Saints in passing (14/18, 202 yards, 1 TD). Rookie receiver Kenny Stills led the Saints in receptions (64 yards), including a 16-yard TD pass from Brees in the first quarter. Second-year receiver Nick Toon had one reception in the game, but it was a 56-yard pass that set up Mark Ingram’s TD run.

Rookie running back Khiry Robinson led the Saints in rushing (50 yards). Mark Ingram scored on two-yard run in the first quarter. Garrett Hartley had a busy night with four FG, including one from 51 yards.

The Saints backups bumbled during the second half. The team turned the ball over three times in the third quarter. QB Seneca Wallace fumbled the ball, which the Raiders returned for a 1-yard TD. Wallace also had one interception. Not a great way to work your way onto the final roster. Travaris Cadet also struggled in Friday’s game, fumbling twice.

The defense went into this game as the #1 defense in the NFL, and they continue to look promising. The defense registered five sacks. Oh, and we had a safety. Raiders RB Jamize Olawale was tackled in the endzone by Saints OLB Will Herring

Raiders QB Matt Flynn had 124 yards and a TD, an 18-yard pass to Denarius Moore. DE Ryan Robinson took advantage of a Saints fumble, with a one-yard return.

The Saints are on the road the next two weeks. They’ll be in H-town to take on the Texans in Week 3 of the preseason (August 25, 3 pm).

When the Saints return to the Superdome for regular season opener against the Falcons, they will do so without long-time announcer Jerry Romig. The longtime Saints announcer was at the mic for the last time on Friday. Romig retires after 44 years on the job.

And OH YEAH—there was a female ref in this game. Sarah Thomas is in the NFL’s developmental programming for officials. She’s trying to make league history by becoming the first female full-time referee.
