Finally, Manti Te’o has spoken.
Granted, it wasn’t exactly to the public, since he broke his silence in an off-camera interview, late at night, with his lawyer present, and ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap had to tell us everything that Te’o said, but it still happened.
Unfortunately, there are still about 600 loose ends to this story, meaning it’s still really, really confusing and weird.
There are bits and pieces that still don’t add up, there’s some new info to consider, and there are still so many questions. First let’s look at the facts (“facts”?) according to Manti:
Te’o tells @jeremyschaap he wasn’t part of girlfriend hoax. “No. never. I wasn’t faking it. I wasn’t part of this.”
— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) January 19, 2013
ESPN: Manti Te’o said he lied to his father about having met Lennay Kekua, prompting his father to tell reporters that the two had met.
— Brian Hamilton (@ChiTribHamilton) January 19, 2013
ESPN: Manti Te’o tried to speak with Kekua via Skype and Facetime, but person was in what he called a “black box” and wasn’t seen.
— Brian Hamilton (@ChiTribHamilton) January 19, 2013
Manti Te’o to ESPN: “I knew it was crazy that I was with somebody I didn’t meet.”
— Sports Illustrated (@SInow) January 19, 2013
Manti Te’o told Schaap “I kind of tailored my stories…”
— Bruce Feldman (@BFeldmanCBS) January 19, 2013
Schaap says they began contact on Facebook his sophomore year. “Got serious” on April 28, the day he was told she’d been in a crash.
— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) January 19, 2013
Te’o never asked for money during plot, but Kekua once requested his checking account number to send him money. Te’o didn’t provide it
— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) January 19, 2013
Manti Te’o to ESPN on Lennay Kekua: “There were blocks and times and periods in which we would talk and then it would end.”
— Brian Hamilton (@ChiTribHamilton) January 19, 2013
Te’o said on Sept. 12 after grandmother died he got in argument on phone w/Kekua.Later that day, he was told Kekua had died
— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) January 19, 2013
Why didn’t Manti Te’o visit Lennay Kekua in the hospital? Te’o to ESPN: “It never really crossed my mind. I don’t know. I was in school.”
— Brian Hamilton (@ChiTribHamilton) January 19, 2013
Te’o said group of people, including woman claiming to be Lennay, showed up at ND’s team hotel for BCS title game in Miami
— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) January 19, 2013
Te’o said Kekua called him Dec. 6 & said there was something she needed to tell him but it could wait until after BCS title game Jan. 8
— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) January 19, 2013
Some of you have asked: I can say with near-certitude that ESPN did not pay for Te’o interview. Not how they do editorial.
— Richard Deitsch (@richarddeitsch) January 19, 2013
Te’o: “When (people) hear the facts, they’ll know. They’ll know there is no way I could be a part of this”
— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) January 19, 2013
Te’o: “I don’t wish an ill thing to somebody. I just hope (Tuiasosopo) learns. I think embarrassment is big enough”
— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) January 19, 2013
And now for some reactions:
Whenever I tell the truth, I always lawyer up and give off camera interviews on a Friday night. It just screams TRUTH.
— Injury Rate (@injuryrate) January 19, 2013
Yeah that’s really appealing to the NFL…I’m a moron, got duped, and it affected me so profoundly that I couldn’t perform.Draft me!
— Soaring to Glory (@SoaringtoGlory) January 19, 2013
Guys, I have something really important to say that I want everyone to hear. So obviously I’ve chosen an off-camera chat, late Friday night.
— Will Leitch (@williamfleitch) January 19, 2013
“i kind of tailored my stories” is lying, bruh.
— Bomani Jones (@bomani_jones) January 19, 2013
I’m guessing Te’o didn’t tell Notre Dame he “tailored his stories” to others.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) January 19, 2013
Whenever someone asks me if I’m telling the truth, I’m just gonna tell them “I kind of tailored my stories…”
— Tom Green (@Tomas_Verde) January 19, 2013
Took em in for a few alterations, improved the swag. RT @kegsneggs: I “kinda tailored my stories” is the new YOLO.
— Andrew Bucholtz (@AndrewBucholtz) January 19, 2013
Te’o said the hoax affected his play in the BCS title game? Almost like he was…invisible? #badumbump #trytheveal
— Katie Dzwierzynski (@kdzwierzynski) January 19, 2013
Oh Boy! Te’o tells ESPN he wasn’t convinced until 2 days ago that he was being duped. Are you kidding me??? #dumbasbricks
— Rick Henry (@RickHenry10) January 19, 2013
i wonder how many man hours would be required for a hoax as described. i mean, this is a LOT of work for some prank.
— Bomani Jones (@bomani_jones) January 19, 2013
So Notre Dame ordered a private investigation of its own student-athlete then didn’t reveal the results to said student-athlete?
— Timothy Burke (@bubbaprog) January 19, 2013
Adding the restrictions and having Te’o's “account” of this parsed out the way it just was isn’t helping his credibility.
— Bruce Feldman (@BFeldmanCBS) January 19, 2013
So Notre Dame thought Te’o was going to address the story next week, but Te’o thought girl existed until 2 days ago?
— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) January 19, 2013
Hey, Manti Te’o, call me maybe? I have some lovely oceanfront property in Kansas to sell you.
— Katie Dzwierzynski (@kdzwierzynski) January 19, 2013
Even Unsolved Mysteries would be throwing side-eye at this case..
— Ms. Stabby(@LadyBlueICU) January 19, 2013
Didn’t visit his hospitalized gf. Didn’t attend her funeral. Picked a fight with her as she’s on her death bed. And now he’s single ladies!
— GGramling_SI (@GGramling_SI) January 19, 2013
I can believe he was duped…but not for 3 years!!! Too many red flags. Is he that clueless?
— Rick Henry (@RickHenry10) January 19, 2013
For me & many others who went to school many miles away from loved ones, this is shocking news that you don’t get breaks to visit them.
— Craig (@_craigtweets) January 19, 2013
Excuse me, ND didn’t have classes from May 11 until June 18. Plenty of time for hospital visit, I’d think. registrar.nd.edu/calendar/previ…
— Travis Haney (@TravHaneyESPN) January 19, 2013
OK, with these quotes coming out, now it makes sense why it wasn’t live. Also, WAS HIS LAWYER BUSY PLAYING ANGRY BIRDS?
— Adam Kramer (@KegsnEggs) January 19, 2013
Meh. I was in school. I don’t know. She was just dying.
— Matthew Schwerha (@MatthewSchwerha) January 19, 2013
I wonder if Manti Te’o has befriended a bunch of Nigerian princes?
— Katie Dzwierzynski (@kdzwierzynski) January 19, 2013
Manti Te’o (and others) had a chance to address and end this in late December. And in early January. And earlier this week. And today…
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) January 19, 2013
she had cancer and was runnin from the dopeman. that’s an exhausting life, jack.
— Bomani Jones (@bomani_jones) January 19, 2013
RT @richarddeitsch: Schaap said Te’o told him he had a girlfriend this fall after Lennay Kekua died. If so,she’ll be interviewed
— Doug Gottlieb (@GottliebShow) January 19, 2013
Te’o on Dec. 26 to ND: “I think it’s a scam.” ND on Jan. 5: “You’re right. It was.” Te’o on Jan. 18: “I didn’t believe it until Wed.” #wut??
— Andy Glockner (@AndyGlockner) January 19, 2013
The Manti Te’o story is a mix of 30-for-30, Catfish & one of my grandmother’s telenovelas.
— Luis M. (@lcm1986) January 19, 2013
Te’o believed that she had leukemia, was dead, and was running from drug dealers, but that she wasn’t real was too far?
— Andy Hutchins (@AndyHutchins) January 19, 2013
Manti Te’o told ESPN that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo apologized via Twitter two days ago. That’s where we are, Earth.
— Brian Hamilton (@ChiTribHamilton) January 19, 2013
When Te’o & family tell Notre Dame he was duped on Dec. 26 & their investigator verifies it, he’s still uncertain in mid January? It’s odd.
— Charles Robinson (@CharlesRobinson) January 19, 2013
So in three years they never met, Facetime/Skype didn’t work, she died, came back, cited drug dealers, and the light came on two days ago?
— Bruce Arthur (@bruce_arthur) January 19, 2013
Either Manti Te’o is an insane liar or the most naive person & worst ‘boyfriend’ I’ve ever heard of. Either way, not a good look.
— Matt Clapp (@sharapovasthigh) January 19, 2013
Stay tuned for the next episode, everyone.

Someone on Twitter “suggested” to me that he didn’t go see his girlfriend because “it’s not like it’s a 5 hour drive.” So..there’s your explanation, everyone.
