Strong Second Half Leads to Creighton Win

A 44-point second half led to the Creighton Bluejays coming back from a halftime deficit and getting their second win of the season, 77-60.

Creighton, ranked 15th in the latest polls, had a rough time scoring in the first half as they went into halftime down 37-33. The Blazers were able to maintain their lead through the first couple minutes of the second half, at one point leading by seven. UAB lost their lead with about 10 minutes left in the game as they weren’t able to hold off the hot shooting of Creighton.

Creighton shot 57 percent from the field in the second half, including 40 percent from beyond the three point arc.

The Bluejays got it together in part thanks to guard Josh Jones. The senior had 18 points in the game, including 4-of-6 from beyond the three point line.

Gregory Echenique finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Grant Gibbs also stepped up for Creighton as he scored 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting and had six assists.

It was a rough night however for Doug McDermott, who finished with five points on 2-for-6 shooting and had three fouls. The last time that happened was during the CBI in March 2011 against Oregon.

It was a contrast from the first game against North Texas when McDermott had 21 points in a 71-51 win Nov. 9. McDermott went an entire season last year without having a single-digit scoring game.

For UAB, they were led by Isiah Jones, who had 16 points. Jordan Swing and Rod Rucker each had 12 points in the loss.

Creighton will be home again Sunday to play Presbyterian. UAB will also be home Sunday as they host Navy.
