NCAA Tournament Round 3, Day 2 SEC Recap: Florida Rolls To Sweet Sixteen

No. 7 Florida 84, No. 15 Norfolk State 50

The Cinderella story is over.

After bouncing No. 2 seed Missouri out of the Big Dance on Friday, Norfolk State (26-10) was looking the keep their unlikely postseason run alive and send the Gators back to Gainesville. Unfortunately for them, Florida (25-10) was just too good, and UF will now advance to the Sweet Sixteen while the Spartans will be heading home.

The Gators were solid on both sides of the ball, while the Spartans struggled offensively and defensively. The game was a blowout by halftime, with UF up 47-19. Their first half included a 25-0 run. The second half saw more domination from the Gators, and they led by as many as 36 points. Norfolk State, apparently having used up all their luck against Mizzou, had no answer for UF.

Florida went 28 for 53 in field goals and 10 of 28 from behind the arc. NSU went 18 for 66 in the paint and a paltry 4-24 from three-point range.

Kenny Boynton was the top player for the Gators with 20 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Marcos Tamares led the Spartans with 12 points, five rebounds, and one assist. Five UF players scored in double digits, Tamares was the only one for Norfolk State.

Florida will take on No. 3-seeded Marquette on Thursday. Top-seeded Kentucky, the only other SEC team left in the Tourney, will play No. 4 seed Indiana on Friday.
