As announced by Baseball America, the Mariners have signed third baseman Leurys Vargas, a 16-year-old power hitter from the Dominican Republic. At 6’3″, 210 pounds, Vargas is an imposing presence even without his bat. Among his accomplishments in the Dominican Prospect League are a 2012 All-Star title and a spot in the Perfect Game National Showcase.
Per the official report from the DPL:
He’s a right handed fielder who only swings from the left side. Vargas plays 1B/3B and has shown mobility and defensive skills to be a solid defender. He grew up playing 3B although his below average arm strength will limit him to play 1B at the professional level. For now the big man can really swing the bat, he’s a line drive gap hitter who frequently stays inside the ball and will amaze you with some major pull side power.
Vargas has agreed to a contract of $400,000.
