CHAMPAGNE SHOWERS!

Maybe Avila should go with ski goggles next season, less fog?

Last night at Kauffman stadium the Detroit Tigers did something they have not done since 1934 and 1935.

With a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals, the Tigers won the American League Central in back-to-back years.

The goggles were classic and the post game speech by Miguel Cabrera will probably go down in history as thee most repetitive interview ever.

The biggest inning of the night was the top of the sixth when Cabrera hit his 44th home run, taking the lead in home runs in the American League.

Within minutes of the Cabrera home run, Prince Fielder hit a line drive double past David Lough.

With Fielder on second, Jhonny Peralta hit a catch-able ball with two outs to Lough in center who made a costly drop that would allow Fielder to score.

Now with Peralta on second Andy Dirks would hit a single that would shift Peralta to third and Dirks to second on the throw to third.

Avisail Garcia was intentionally walked to load the bases with Gerald Laird on deck.  Laird made the Kansas City Royals regret that decision by hitting a base clearing triple to make the run total five in the sixth inning.

Tigers Blow Series with Angels

Well the Detroit Tigers blew a chance this weekend to pull ahead of the Chicago White Soxs, but honestly why would they want to when they have a series with the Soxs starting today?  Of course there has to be a little drama.

With the White Soxs losing last night as well to the Royals in ten innings, the Tigers are still only two games back.

Last night in Anaheim the Angels pitching staff put in work only giving up five hits and two runs.  The Tigers lost 3-2.

Detroit can’t seem to get Anibal Sanchez a win.  Sanchez went seven innings giving up three earned runs and two home runs, but the man should be able to get more than two runs of support from some of the best hitters in the league.

Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder both went 0-3, but Andy Dirks hit his sixth home run and Brennan Boesch hit his 21st double.

Tonight the Detroit Tigers take on the Chicago White Soxs in one of the biggest series of the year at 8:10 p.m.  Rick Porcello will kick of the series against Jose Quintana.

Detroit Moves Nowhere

Last night’s loss to the Cleveland Indians hurt, but not as much as it would have if the Chicago White Soxs did not get crushed by the Minnesota Twins last night.

Detroit had an opportunity to move up in the AL Central with a win last night, but instead Rick Porcello was handed his 11th loss of the season with Detroit losing 3-2.

Porcello gave up three earned runs in 5.2 innings giving up eight hits and striking out two.

Miguel Cabrera hit his 34th homerun and Alex Avila hit his 18th double.  Those two hits were two of the only four hits the Tigers had last night.

The Tigers take on the Indians again tonight at Comerica Park at 7:05.  The pitching matchup for tonight is Ubaldo Jimenez v Doug Fister.

Tigers Lose AGAIN

Why are the Detroit Tigers losing to the Kansas City Royals?  WHY?  Turns out the Kansas City Royals think they are in a pennant race.  For some reason it always stings to lose to teams in the AL Central, especially at the end of August.

Detroit could not string hits together last night losing 2-1.

Rick Porcello pitched decent giving up eight hits, one home run, two earned runs and two walks.  Porcello finished the game with four strike outs.  The only problem was Porcello only went five innings.

Porcello has been averaging one strike out and inning over his past few starts which is unusual for Porcello who forces batters into a lot of ground balls.

Prince Fielder went 3 for 4 with one double. Fielder is leading the American League with a .410 OBP.

The Tigers need to shake off these losses to the Royals because they are headed back to Comerica for a huge series against the Chicago White Soxs.

Tigers Continue to “Spank” the Yankees

Miguel Cabrera is on his way to an MVP season.

If you missed the home opener with the New York Yankees you did miss Justin Verlander throw 14 strikeouts, but other than that not too much.

The Yankees lost 7-2 and the two runs the Yankees did put on the board were unearned from a Justin Verlander error.

Last night was not much different.

Miguel Cabrera took the majority of the Detroit Tigers attention collecting his 95th RBI.  That’s 95 RBI’s by August 7th, and there is no real sign of Cabrera slowing down anytime soon.

Porcello collected his ninth win and Jose Valverde almost did not let that happen giving up two earned runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 6-5.

The Detroit Tigers continue to take on the New York Yankees this evening at 7:05p.m.  Anibal Sanchez will take the mound for the Tigers and CC Sabathia will climb up the hill for the Yankees.

Smash Bros Lead By Example and Hit Big

Looking to avoid the sweep last night in Boston the Tigers finally seemed to realize that you have to get back to the basics in order to win baseball games. The basic skill that won them the game last night? Hitting the ball. Huh. Who would have thought hitting the baseball and bringing in runs could actually win you the game? When Boston threatened to rally back Fielder and Cabrera decided they were not going to leave Boston with another loss and another sweep. With a two run homer from Miggy and a solo shot from Fielder the Tigers were able to walk away with the win last night 7-5, thank goodness. gotta love when the Smash Bros do what they do best.

Comparative to the two previous games the Tigers had 12 hits in last nights game despite more bad calls from the umpire, something they have struggled with in the past when playing at Fenway. » Continue reading “Smash Bros Lead By Example and Hit Big”

Blue Jays Show Up Tigers Pitching

Detroit is now 1.5 games behind the Chicago White Soxs.  Suprised?  I am not surprised.  There will be fluxuation in the first place in the AL Central for the next couple of months.

Toronto beat up Detroit’s pitching winning 8-3.

Rick Porcello gave up five earned runs and six of Toronto’s nine hits. Octavio Dotel came in for one inning and gave up two hits and an earned run.  Same story for Duane Below who gave up one earned run.

Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder accounted for all three of the Tigers runs.

Detroit takes on Toronto again tonight at 7:07p.m.

Tigers Take First

Nothing is more bittersweet than taking first place away from the Chicago White Soxs.  The Detroit Tigers did just that last night in Comerica Park.

The Tigers beat the White Soxs 7-1 and Rick Porcello collected his 7th win of the season.

Austin Jackson had himself a day with four RBI’s and a double while Brennan Boesch kept hot with three RBI’s and a homerun.

The Detroit Tigers continue their series with the Chicago White Soxs this afternoon at 1:05 and Jacob Turner will be taking the mound.

Detroit Sports Fans

We are looking for some Detroit Tigers fans to be guest writers for our site!

Even though I have moved further north to the great little town of Traverse City, I am still seeing Detroit D’s everywhere.

We are talking tatooed all over bodies, flags hanging all over houses and yes, even D’s on cars.  I know that most people in town right now are tourists, but it still got me thinking about Detroit Tigers fans and Detroit sports fans in general.

I’ve always been a Detroit Tigers fan.  I never went through that Yankees phase like alot of people from Kalamazoo, and I have never jumped on any bandwagons that I can remember.

I am a fan of baseball and alot of the players that don’t play for Detroit, but there is just something about Detroit baseball.

Sports are always present, minus a few times when there are lockouts, but every single day there is a sport to talk about.

I can’t say that I have ever lived during some of the tough times that Detroit has experienced, but I can tell you that the reason why Detroit has thee best fans is because of those tough times.  After a long day that didn’t go quite as expected from April to October, Detroit baseball is a distraction.

“Did you see Miguel Cabrera’s home run?”

“What did you think about the Prince Fielder signing?”

“Justin Verlander threw another no hitter, did you see it?”

These questions are alot more “fun” to ask rather than what happened at work, or what bills you are working to pay.

The point is, Detroit baseball keeps myself and many other Michiganders sane.  I know Motown Lowdown has not been thee most interesting site to read over the past few weeks, but we are transitioning.  Not to be corny, but kind of like Detroit.

We are currently looking for some guest writers that would like their opinions about Detroit baseball posted on our site.  If you are interested please comment on this post with your email address and Motown Lowdown will be in touch.

The Detroit Tigers took the series from the Twins last night winning 7-3.  Prince Fielder hit a three-run bomb and his bash brother Miguel Cabrera went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Drew Smyly and the Tigers start their series with the Royals tonight at 7:05p.m. in Detroit.

Porcello Domination Station

After Justin Verlander was dominated by the Tampa Bay lineup on Friday night, Rick Porcello came in on Saturday night completely dialed in.

Porcello went seven innings with four strikeouts and only four hits.  Porcello would not allow any runs and retired almost every single Tampa Bay Rays player.  The Tigers took the win 6-2.

The only Rays runs were scored off of two solo home runs by Jeff Keppinger and former Tiger Carlos Pena.  The homeruns were given up by Joaquin Benoit when he came in for relief in the eigth.

Austin Jackson hit a big three-run homerun and Jhonny Peralta proved that he was thee best Peralta playing last night collecting two RBIs.

The Tigers finish the series with the Rays this afternoon when Drew Smyly takes the mound to try and win the series and put the Detroit Tigers closer to the top of the AL Central, now four games back.
