Every single award that Miguel Cabrera has come away with this season has been warranted, especially if you think about all of the changes that have happened in one year for Miggy.
After a controversial 2011 season with all of Miguel Cabrera’s off season issues, Dave Dombrowski and the Detroit Tigers stirred up Cabrera’s world again signing Prince Fielder.
Cabrera would now move over to third base with no argument and a new hairstyle, where he would quickly break a bone in his face under his eye socket.
2012 was off to a rough start.
Cabrera’s season soon started to turn to a memorable one when he collected his 1,000th RBI. He is one of the few players in league history to reach this plateau before their 30th birthday.
Soon it was half way through the season and Cabrera was voted into the All-Star game as a reserve with the Detroit Tigers far behind in the AL Central at the break.
Cabrera was voted the American League Player of the Month for August batting .357 with six doubles, eight home runs, 24 RBIs, 19 runs scored and 12 walks in 26 games.
As if the Detroit Tigers season was not nerve wrecking enough, Tigers fans were crossing their fingers every time Cabrera was at bat because he was in a tight race for the Triple Crown.
Cabrera would end up winning the Triple Crown, finishing the season with an AL-leading 44 home runs, 139 RBIs, and .330 batting average.
Cabrera became the first player Latin American player to win the triple crown as well as the first player to win it without a tie in any of the three categories since Frank Robinson in 1966.
Cabrera added Sporting News Player of the Year to his resume as well as the AL Hank Aaron Award.
The biggest award and the most recent was when Miguel Cabrera was named the AL’s Most Valuable Player, receiving 22 out of 28 first place votes.
Cabrera had a huge season off the field as well in 2012.
Cabrera began The Miguel Cabrera Foundation to help a variety of children’s funds in 2012 and has focused on getting children involved with baseball and softball.
Having a season that Cabrera has had has led to a “Josh Hamilton” affect in the media. Last year Cabrera was getting a DUI and this season he is thee Most Valuable Player in the American League.
