Garage Gossip: It’s May So Who Cares About Jeremy Mayfield…

If my foreclosed home was auctioned to a bank and I had ten days to leave I'd look like this too.

Welcome to the wonderful month of May, race fans.  Does everybody recall how important this month is?

If you’re a fan of anything that speeds on four wheels and don’t know how important May is your dunce cap is in the mail.

Duh, it’s Indianapolis 500 month!  So exciting, especially down in these parts of Indianapolis.  Radio stations are already buzzing with excitement and my tickets are on my refrigerator waiting for race day.

However, we can’t neglect this week’s racing headlines even if they involve the likes of broken down, drowned out in bankruptcy probably feels like crawling into a hole and dying former drug addicted driver.

Yeah, Jeremy Mayfield is in the news yet again and hopefully for the last time.

Daytona 500: And On The 27th Day…Everything Happened.

This Wisconsin native was the "Big Cheese" in Daytona tonight. (photo credit: Chris Graythen)

The race technically ended on the twenty-eighth day but who’s counting, right?  This weekend’s Daytona 500 kind of ran together in one, huge blur of weirdness that started way back yesterday around noon.

And just ended about five minutes ago.  No joke.

In twenty years as a race fan, this was the most unusual of them all.  Rain was our problem on Sunday and fire was our problem on Monday.  Go figure, right?

Unless readers sat and suffered through the more than two-hour long caution for a strange, almost  God-like act at Daytona trust me when I say readers have no idea.

Until tonight I thought I’d seen it all at the track…until the jet dryer nearly burned the track down.  Thanks, Juan.

Oh yeah.  And Matt Kenseth won the 2012 Daytona 500 with an overheating car and nearly zero radio communication.

Sprint Cup: Almirola To Pilot Legendary No. 43 At RPM

Congrats, Aric Almirola on landing the King's legendary No. 43 at RPM.

It’s finally official:  Aric Almirola will be at the helm of the No. 43 Sprint Cup car in 2012.

We had broke the potential possibility of this becoming truth last week but the rumor has finally been confirmed by RPM this morning as reported by USA Today.

Aric has Sprint Cup experience as he has thirty-five starts to his name and finished fourth at Homestead back in November in the season finale.

I wouldn’t remember because I was too overcome with emotion for unknown reasons.  Ahem.  Queue “We Are The Champions” by Queen, please.

Aric leaves his full-time ride at JR Motorsports where he finished fourth in the standings in 2011.  Even this move by RPM shocked the hell out of both Erin and I and we aren’t taken by suprise too often at the same time.

So now this leaves two drivers out in the cold:  Brian Vickers and David Ragan.  Will either driver land a legitimate, credible ride before the Daytona 500?  The closer we get to the big show, the less likely that’s appearing on our radar.

We only have fifty-three days, two hours and fifty-three minutes until the Daytona 500 but who’s counting, right?

NASCAR Post-Christmas Hangover: Aric Almirola To RPM?

Good morning, ladies. I'm Aric. Glad to know I could make your Tuesday a little better. (photo credit: www.boston.com)

Good morning!  Tons of rumors have been flying around about who is going to join RPM before Speedweeks start in February.

I’m recovered from Christmas and ready to go with a serious NASCAR rumor floating around out there this morning courtesy of Lana Bandoim who is a contributor via the Yahoo! Contributor Network.

Most of the big names have been signed with maybe the exception of David Ragan but this morning we’re throwing another log onto the fire and another name into the hat.

The driver?  Aric Almirola.  Who?  The dude that finished fourth in this year’s Nationwide series standings.  He’s already set to take on a full-time ride in 2012 with JR Motorsports but perhaps that might change in the not-so-distant future.

Plus Aric is a little bit cute so I had to make an excuse to put up his picture for all of you to feast your peepers on.  Do I need another reason other than that?  Didn’t think so.

RPM has already said they’re going to field two cars in 2012.  That’s great but who are the drivers?  RPM has remained mum all this time and continues to do so and it’s driving the NASCAR family crazy, well at least me.

So that’s the latest on the silly season I have for you.  If anything changes, please know we’ll bring the latest gossip, rumors and announcements right away.
