The Maryland women’s basketball team defeated visiting Wake Forest, 88-61 in their final regular season game on Senior Day at the Comcast Center. The Terps also received some luck, as Duke beat North Carolina a little later in the day to bring them and UNC into a second place tie. The Terps won the coin toss and are now the number two seed heading into the upcoming ACC Tournament that begins on Thursday in Greensboro, NC. The top four seeds have first round byes.
Back to the game…
Maryland only led 6-5 early, before blowing past Wake from then on. They received great play off the bench from guard Sequoia Austin (15 points) and forward Malina Howard (13 points). But it was all about the seniors.
Tianna Hawkins, who could win ACC Player of the Year, did not let the emotion of the day get the best of her. She scored 18 points and hauled in 11 rebounds. That earned her the conference scoring title. Caitlin Adams, the volleyball player who did not join the team until January, entered the game to huge cheers from the crowd (which included her volleyball teammates). There were actually chants of “Caitlin Adams” at the final media timeout (3:30 to go). Every time she touched the ball, the crowd yelled for her to “shoot”. She missed her first two free throws, but the third time on the line, it bounced in and the crowd went nuts.
Following the game, Austin, Alyssa Thomas (16 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists), Coach Brenda Frese, and Hawkins joined the media for the postgame press conference.
The Demon Deacons never got into a groove and were sloppy for the most part (20 turnovers). They have some pretty good scorers (four average double figures), but their two big scorers could not put the ball in the basket.
Wake coach Jen Hoover and senior Sandra Garcia (ten points and six rebounds) talked to the media following the game.
