From the 1st inning to the 6th, it was all about popping dingers outside Peoria Stadium. I mean, there were singles and doubles and other types of hits, but the real runs came from long shots. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.
So, about these home runs. Nelson Cruz took Blake Beavan’s 91 MPH fastball over the left field fence. Matt Harrison gave Vinnie Catricala his 71 MPH changeup for another home run in left field, and Miguel Olivo surprised us all with a 3-run homer off Joe Nathan’s 87 MPH slider.
Also, Jesus Montero hit a two-out double off Mark Hamburger to score Trayvon Robinson and Brad Miller, which is cool. Not as cool as hitting home runs off Matt Harrison, but still cool.
Notable news as we head towards Opening Day, regular playing time, and a 25-man roster: Figgins went 1-for-2 with a strikeout and single in the leadoff position. Ichiro batted third and went 0-for-2, reaching base on a walk from Joe Nathan and stealing second. Beavan pitched 5.0 innings, struck out 2 batters, and allowed 3 hits and 2 earned runs.
