Live Game Thread: Welcome To Our Nightmare

Tonight’s game thread was written by Aerys Sports’ Cubs reporter, Julie DiCaro. You can find Christine’s game thread over at Julie’s site, A League Of Her Own.

Oh hello, “Best Fans In Baseball.” What an honor it is to be preparing your game thread for tonight. Will you be favoring us with the wave this evening? I guess we’ll find out later.

I suppose you’re feeling pretty good about yourselves, sitting up at the top of the division 8 games ahead of us. As well you should. Once again, you are in first place and the Cubs are trying to stay out of the basement. But let me warn you, the Cubs have led the major leagues in one area this season.

Having players injured in freak accidents.

Oh yes. Tyler Colvin takes a shard of broken bat to his chest, which punctures his lung (okay,  that was last season), Marlon Byrd takes a fastball to the face, breaking multiple bones. Aramis Ramirez dives for a screaming grounder, which takes a bad hop and catches him in the lip. Andrew Cashner pitches a brilliant game and, with no apparent injury, walks off the mound an onto the 60-day DL.  Obliques and groins have run amok. Forearms have been tight. Shoulders have been loose.

I guess my point is that, when when people attract injuries the way the Cubs do, other people are often hurt as a by-product. Bystanders. Onlookers. Opposing players.

I think you see where I’m going.

I wouldn’t dig in there up at the plate. Can’t envision a scenario where a fastball knocks our catcher unconscious and then ricochets up and breaks your hitter’s nose? I can. Think it’s nuts that your runner could slide hard into second and our infielder accidentally slits the bag open with his cleats, spilling ball-bearings everywhere and causing your runner to slide straight into the outfield wall? I don’t.  Have you ever seen a man’s groin come flying out of his thigh and hit one of your players in the eye, blinding him for life? You just may yet.

Enjoy the game.

Our extremely-fragile and injury-prone lineup will be this:

  1. Fukudome RF
  2. Barney 2B
  3. Castro SS
  4. Soto C
  5. Peña 1B
  6. Montañez LF
  7. Colvin CF
  8. LeMahieu 3B
  9. Dempster P

You may think this looks like a Spring Training lineup–and you would be right. But we can’t afford to lose anymore players. Everyone who is healthy and worth anything must remain safely tucked away on the bench, behind a layer of protective glass.

Goodnight and good luck. And don’t say I didn’t warn you. . . .

  1. Christine Coleman says:

What? No mention of Ryan Theriot?? Julie, I’m so disappointed.

And, by the way, RYAN THERIOT HAS A 16-GAME HITTING STREAK!

    Also, the Cards lineup:
    Theriot SS
    Jay LF
    Pujols 1B
    Berkman RF
    Molina C
    Rasmus CF
    Schumaker 2B
    Descalso 3B
    Garcia P

  2. Carl Heartscubs Gierhan says:

If there’s one thing I hope the Cubs can do tonight, it’s snap that hitting streak. Maybe 3-4 HBP and a WAG?

    1. Christine Coleman says:

      What’s a WAG?

      1. Carl Heartscubs Gierhan says:

        Weak Ass Grounder

        1. Christine Coleman says:

Oh, yeah. He did that last night … right into a double play. It’s the Cards thing this year. Leading the league! And Albert has the most.

        2. thefakenick says:

i thought WAG was player’s hot wife, i was getting excited

  3. Miranda says:

She mentions the Wave? But not Theriot?! I am shocked!

    1. Christine Coleman says:

      I know!

Fearing the RYAN THERIOT 16-GAME HITTING STREAK, perhaps?

      1. juliedicaro says:

I have to keep you on your toes!

        1. Christine Coleman says:

We are! Just as much on our toes as The Riot …

          Oops. Maybe not.

(And if Kelly reads this, she’s going to get mad — not the way for a Theriot Fan Club member to act. Sorry!)

          1. hawkelly says:

I’m here. I believe “on our toes” is okay. The Fan Club is fully aware of his shortcomings. :)

            1. Miranda says:

              Shortcomings… indeed! lol :)

      2. Miranda says:

Um, 17-GAME HITTING STREAK after tonight! lol

  4. jgerb says:

    All I’ve got is #cubssuck

  5. jgerb says:

Kinda glad neither I nor twitter was around in 1908. I’d hate #cubssuck even more.

  6. jgerb says:

In case any of you care, I am @gerbalaya on twitter. I know that Miranda knows who I am. :)

      1. Christine Coleman says:

        THE Jimmer?

(My, we are so caps-happy these days. YAY!!!)

  7. thefakenick says:

hey, is this where we are live blogging Worlds Dumbest on TruTV?

  8. D.B. says:

This site has the aura of “winning” surrounding it. It feels kinda weird.

    1. Christine Coleman says:

You can always look at the very top of this post for Julie’s picture. Maybe that will make you feel more at home?

    2. Miranda says:

Yeah, it’s called being on the right side of the rivalry! :} Haha!

  9. Mary says:

Hello all. Was there ever any reason given for Theriot not to be in the line up?

    1. Mary Schless says:

Please strike my comment. I was distracted.

      1. thefakenick says:

        :)

    2. Christine Coleman says:

What? When did it change, because he was.

      1. Mary Schless says:

I’m half thinking right now. I was looking at an old line up from another game way in the past.

        1. Christine Coleman says:

OK! It’s Friday night. Have a drink!

          1. Mary Schless says:

            I am about to.

  10. Christine Coleman says:

Ricky and Al doing the game. Ugh. Thankfully I have WGN as an option.

    1. jgerb says:

I’m aware that I may be in the minority, but I love Al.

      1. lovethemusic says:

I like Al as long as he remembers when to stop. Hey Chris I bet the Cub announcers were not as happy about the LB home run What I don’t like is all the extra people in the booth talking about events for the inning

        1. Christine Coleman says:

Linda, I am totally with you on that! I don’t like the third inning and all the chatter.

          1. cardinal70 says:

And, of course, this season I’ve loved the third inning even more for the irritation it gives you. ;)

  11. thefakenick says:

how do you get your pic in your profile?

    1. Christine Coleman says:

      Go here: http://en.gravatar.com/

You can sign in and add a pic.

  12. D.B. says:

This is so messed up…Garcia, Berkman and Molina are all on my fantasy team. Maybe I should be posting over here more often.

    1. Mary Schless says:

I’ve got Garcia and Molina on my team too. They have been doing pretty good so far.

    2. Christine Coleman says:

You should! So far, we like you.

Berkman is on my fantasy team too. He hasn’t helped much recently, damn him.

      1. hawkelly says:

Now that is not how an LB Fan Club member should be acting!

        1. Christine Coleman says:

Hey, I love LB — you know that. He’s just not helping my team anymore in the least! And, were he not LB, I would have dumped him already.

          1. Christine Coleman says:

Oh, wait — I LOVE what LB is doing for my fantasy team! LOL!

  13. lovethemusic says:

Hi to everyone. Jaime looks sharp at home

    1. Christine Coleman says:

Hey Linda! He looked good in that first inning. So far, so good.

    2. jgerb says:

Much better than the last start!

  14. Christine Coleman says:

    LET’S GO, THERIOT!!!

  15. Miranda says:

    17 GAME HITTING STREAK!!!!

    1. Christine Coleman says:

      YAY!!! MORE CAPS!!!

RYAN THERIOT HAS A 17-GAME HITTING STREAK!!!

  16. thefakenick says:

good to get that first hit outta the way, lead off double

  17. Mary Schless says:

There’s Theriot with a base hit. Booya!

    1. teebob2000 says:

I don’t care what TheRiot does, he doesn’t merit a “booya.” He could go 6-for-6, hit for the cycle with 2 HRs, 7 RBIs, STILL no “booya.”

  18. Mary Schless says:

And a nice bunt my Mr. Jay.

    1. thefakenick says:

not sure i like on of our hottest hitters bunting

      1. Mary Schless says:

        It worked in that situation.

        1. thefakenick says:

except we didn’t get a manufactured run :P

          1. Christine Coleman says:

Damn, LB screwed that up. Didn’t he know he wasn’t supposed to hit a homer? ;)

    2. thefakenick says:

      BOOOOOOYAAAAAA 3 RUN JACK

      1. Christine Coleman says:

Thanks, LB! (And I see you figured out the Gravatar site!)

        1. thefakenick says:

          yes, took me awhile, lol

  19. D.B. says:

This would be a really good time for Theriot to get picked off of third.

    1. Christine Coleman says:

      Shhhhhh …

  20. Mary Schless says:

    Puma with the HOMER!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. D.B. says:

Bad for my fandom…good for my fantasy team.

I guess Berkman is all better now.

  22. jgerb says:

    Gomer Puma!

    1. jgerb says:

FYI..that wasn’t a typo. I call him Gomer Puma. Gomer cuz he reminds me of Gomer Pyle, and Puma is self explanatory.

      1. Christine Coleman says:

        Hmmmm, dislike the Gomer part!

        1. jgerb says:

Hahaha, sorry. He’s always reminded me of Gomer, not just since he came to StL.

          1. Christine Coleman says:

Yes, he was definitely a Gomer as an Astro. And I’m not sure what he was as a Yankee!

    2. Miranda says:

I likes sassy puma better… but that’s obviously just me! I can’t get that to catch on for some reason!

      1. Christine Coleman says:

        But you keep trying!

  23. lovethemusic says:

#LBFanClub. LB shows them how it’s done.

  24. Mary Schless says:

    Yadi Yadi Yadi!

  25. D.B. says:

Well, that was a good ballgame. We’ll see if we can get you guys tomorrow.

  26. thefakenick says:

nothing like giving Jaime a 3 run lead early on

    1. Mary Schless says:

Let’s hope they can back him up with excellent fielding.

      1. Christine Coleman says:

Colby with two hands on the catch — good to see that!

        1. Mary Schless says:

You should always catch with two hands. Makes my grandpa mad when they don’t. It’s baseball basics.

          1. Christine Coleman says:

Grandpa would know, but it’s amazing the number of guys who don’t — or choose not to remember the basics!

            1. thefakenick says:

it’s especially infuriating the guys who one hand it and snap the glove down. Didn’t Andrew Jones used to do that?

              1. lovethemusic says:

Remember when Jim Edmonds played, he would catch with both hands. It was something the announcers talked about. Now you don’t see this much.

            2. thefakenick says:

wait, Cubs are playing a CF with a .108 avg?? wow

  27. D.B. says:

Boy…this Garcia is 180 degrees different than the one who started last Saturday.

    1. Christine Coleman says:

      Thankfully.

  28. Tara Wellman says:

Hello everyone! Jaime looks like he’s back to normal. And LB!!! Love it.

    1. D.B. says:

It’s going to take about 12 starts like this one to statistically make up for that last start.

      1. Tara Wellman says:

True. It did some damage to his stat line. But, I’m just glad to see (so far…knock on wood!) he seems to have shaken off whatever that was in CO.

      2. Christine Coleman says:

There should be some kind of exemption if you give up more than 10 runs at Coors Field. Like, they only count as half-runs toward your ERA.

        1. Tara Wellman says:

          I support this idea!

    2. Christine Coleman says:

Hey Tara! Jaime is definitely looking back to normal. What was that last weekend, anyway?

LB!!! And, of course, RYAN THERIOT HAS A 17-GAME HITTING STREAK!

      1. Tara Wellman says:

I pretty much yelled that when Ryan had that lead off hit. Even better, just got a text from aCubs fan friend saying she hates seeing him in a Cards jersey. :-)

        1. Miranda says:

I hope you told your friend wah! lol

          1. Tara Wellman says:

I told her hate it or not, I’ll keep his 17 game streak, thank you!

            1. Christine Coleman says:

Tara, you’re part of the fan club. It’s 17-GAME STREAK. We are obligated to use all caps. :)

              1. Tara Wellman says:

Gah… My mistake! How could I forget?

  29. D.B. says:

This might hurt my fantasy team…but…

    Perfect game through 3.

  30. Mary Schless says:

    Jaime es caliente. Nice inning.

  31. D.B. says:

So, Cardinals fans, how does it feel that your team is beating up on a poor, innocent, minor league team?

    1. jgerb says:

Can’t speak for the rest of us, but so far it feels pretty good!

      1. Tara Wellman says:

Yeah, I’m feeling pretty good about it actually…

    2. Miranda says:

I do like a little more competition out of the Cubs, but after facing the Giants… I gotta say, this is nice!

    3. Mary Schless says:

      Pretty darn good.

    4. Christine Coleman says:

Last night the Giants beat up a poor, innocent Cards team made up of mostly guys who started the season in the minors (and two pitchers making their major league debuts). So, no sympathy. It feels good!

      1. D.B. says:

I’m fairly sure the real Cubs AAA team could beat the big league team right now.

        1. Mary Schless says:

          They should try that sometime.

          1. lovethemusic says:

I couldn’t tell the difference. They play like the Cubs ;)

    5. jgerb says:

These women are vicious, aren’t they? *running away*

      1. Christine Coleman says:

        Who, us??? ;)

  32. thefakenick says:

guh, you know Albert’s in a slump whey you’re happy he was just able to advance the runner

    1. Tara Wellman says:

That’s the next piece of the puzzle we need to get sorted out. I want the real Albert back!

      1. thefakenick says:

funny thing is he’s not doing horrible, just have high standards

        1. Tara Wellman says:

Agreed. He’s having a very okay year. But for him, “ok” isn’t good enough.

          1. Christine Coleman says:

That’s because Albert has never just been OK. He’s set our expectations high.

            1. Tara Wellman says:

I think his OWN expectations are high, too. So it’s about time he works out the kinks and makes nights like tonight the norm, not the exception!

    2. jgerb says:

My non-educated opinion is that Albert seems to be crouching a bit too much this year. It’s not a huge difference I’ve noticed, but I’ve noticed it.

      1. jgerb says:

I mean more than in the past, not necessarily too much.

        1. Christine Coleman says:

          Problem with his legs?

          1. Miranda says:

Getting old! lol!! *That’s funny cause I am a few months older than him!*

            1. Christine Coleman says:

              Ha!

              1. Miranda says:

You know … it didn’t look like he was crouching as low as usual! #OldManHitIt

  33. thefakenick says:

i’m getting tired of hearing about Buster Posey, already (WGN). Frankly, it was his own fault for not having his footwork correct.

    1. jgerb says:

JT Snow ran over Pudge Rodriguez on the final play of the playoff series between the Giants and Marlins back in ’03. I don’t recall Sabean thinking that was a bad play…

      1. thefakenick says:

        exactly

    2. thefakenick says:

of course, right after i bad mouth them, WGN goes out on my cable, ughh

      1. Tara Wellman says:

        It’s out for me too

        1. thefakenick says:

ok, good, thought it was just my cable, looks like all of twitterville watching WGN just lost it. Mercy rule for Cubs fans? lol

          1. Miranda says:

WGN was frozen on Yadi and his tattoo. I sighed and turned it to Mr. Dan and Mr. Al!

            1. Christine Coleman says:

It’s Mr. Ricky and Mr. Al. The worst combo of all of them.

              1. Miranda says:

Oh that IS Mr. Ricky and Mr. Al. Yeah… paying too much attention to Mr. Dan on twitter!

  34. Mary Schless says:

    Another great hit by Yadi!

    1. lovethemusic says:

Yadi out on fielders choice but I would rather have Shu on the bases. Rest those legs Yadi

      1. Mary Schless says:

        For sure.

  35. D.B. says:

Well…WGN just died on my TV which means DirecTV has decided that, for my health, I can’t watch anymore of this game.

    1. thefakenick says:

here, in Indy on cable, too. My only other option? Fox Sports Ohio and Reds bball. double guh

      1. jgerb says:

Do you not get the FSMW St Louis station? Down here I get both StL and Cincy.

        1. thefakenick says:

no, in indy it’s Cinci and that’s it, everything else on Fox Sports is blacked out

      2. Mary Schless says:

Ewwwww, I hate the Reds more than the Cubs. Don’t subject yourself to torture.

        1. thefakenick says:

i wouldn’t but there’s nothing else on, lol. and reds lead LA 2-1 in bottom 6th

          1. Mary Schless says:

            I guess as long as they’re losing…

    2. Christine Coleman says:

I was watching WGN — any alternative to the Cards announcers are always my option. But now I have no choice.

  36. Christine Coleman says:

Does Al even realize there’s a GAME going on?

    1. Miranda says:

      Does he ever!?!?!

    2. jgerb says:

Don’t hate on Al!!!! Booooo :)

      1. Christine Coleman says:

He’s OK when he’s … not quite so chatty.

        1. jgerb says:

What I like about him is that he’s genuine, even if he gets carried away. He played the game & you can tell at times he really gets annoyed by the things pitchers do. He’s similar to the late Don Drysdale in that regard. I bet Al uses the announcer “mute” button an awful lot.

          1. Christine Coleman says:

I used to like Al back when Joe Buck did the games on Fox Midwest. They always were entertaining.

      2. Miranda says:

When he gets to talking about Jim Edmonds… it’s sweet! LOL! Not creepy! Not creepy at all! ;)

        1. jgerb says:

Me or Al? Cuz I LOVE Jim Edmonds!

          1. Miranda says:

Oh I love him too, but AL… Al LOOOOVES him! lol! No, it’s not creepy!

  37. Carl Heartscubs Gierhan says:

Hooray! Perfect game, no-hitter and shutout gone! That’s the most we can hope for, I’m afraid.

    1. Christine Coleman says:

      Here’s hoping …

      1. PsyMar says:

THE CHICAGO CUBS HAVE A 7,263-GAME HITTING STREAK!

        1. Christine Coleman says:

You need to take your victories where you can.

  38. thefakenick says:

and we’re back WGN America, which i guess is different than some other WGN?

  39. thefakenick says:

ok, that’s an Albert swing, just poked at it and made good contact. KEEP DOING THAT!

    1. Tara Wellman says:

That was a breath of fresh air!

  40. Christine Coleman says:

See, watching on WGN is good karma — Albert even hits homers on this channel!!

    1. PsyMar says:

Why didn’t he do that in 2007 when he was on my fantasy team?

      1. Christine Coleman says:

He wanted to piss you off?

        1. PsyMar says:

I knew he was going to be a good player when he survived a season on my fantasy team without going to the DL. I had so many injuries that season, my best outfielder was Sammy Sosa — Texas Rangers edition (24th-round pick!)

          1. Christine Coleman says:

Was that the year of his 600th HR?

            1. PsyMar says:

Yes, it was. He actually had 21 HR that season, and it seems he was better than I remembered with an OPS+ of 101. The big problem was his .311 OBP. (This was a league with 9 hitting categories and 9 pitching categories, as well as 20 teams with 25-man rosters. And it was my first season playing fantasy baseball.)

  41. Mary Schless says:

    Great homer by Albert!

    1. Christine Coleman says:

      Agreed!

      1. Miranda says:

…That’s an extra good homer! He’s still on my fantasy team! Can’t give up on him!

        1. Christine Coleman says:

Boo for fantasy team homers! (Only ’cause LB is on my bench right now.)

  42. thefakenick says:

um, WGN announcers talking about long term offense in Colby’s hands, uh, how about Jon Jay?

  43. thefakenick says:

hey, the 14 yo is batting for the Cubs now

  44. thefakenick says:

    c’mon Florida

    1. Christine Coleman says:

I picked up Leo Nunez for my fantasy team this week. I could really use a save … but the loss by the Brewers would be better!

      1. thefakenick says:

yes, and aw crap, now milwaukee leads 6-5 in top 9

        1. Tara Wellman says:

Come on, Marlins! Help a girl out, would ya?

          1. thefakenick says:

i know, really, especially since Reds won tonight

      2. Christine Coleman says:

And, yeah, that blown save just figures. My pitchers are awful this week. :(

Most of mine are awful every week.

          1. Christine Coleman says:

This week was just exceptionally bad for me. Ugh.

  45. D.B. says:

Ok…I got my quality start out of Garcia. You can take him out of the game now.

    1. thefakenick says:

heck no, the way the Giants series went, we could use a little rest for our pen

  46. Christine Coleman says:

    Theriot! Nice defensive play!

    1. Miranda says:

lol!! Oh…. Did you know? 17 GAME HITTING STREAK!

  47. D.B. says:

    One damn hit? Good grief?

    1. D.B. says:

      Two damn hits? Seriously?

      1. Christine Coleman says:

        Seriously.

  48. thefakenick says:

    whew, LB

    1. Christine Coleman says:

      Nice catch!

      1. thefakenick says:

every time i see him scampering like that it worries me, us old guys don’t have best legs, lol

  49. Christine Coleman says:

It’s the 25th anniversary of Ferris Buller’s Day Off? OMG, I’m old.

(There is some contest they were promoting on WGN, just so that comment doesn’t sound completely random.)

    1. thefakenick says:

it was on VH1 earlier today, sat there and watched it, lol

      1. Christine Coleman says:

Love the movie! Don’t even know how many times I’ve watched it. And I even saw it a couple of times in the theater 25 years ago!

        1. thefakenick says:

it was one of few John Hughes movies i didn’t see at movies, not sure why

  50. Tara Wellman says:

Booo Marlins…left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. :-/

    1. thefakenick says:

      guh, guh, guh

      1. Christine Coleman says:

Can’t count on anyone for anything.

  51. Christine Coleman says:

Marlins has the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth … and lost to the Brewers 6-5.

  52. thefakenick says:

well, that’s a good 8 innings. nice to give the pen a bit of a rest

    1. Christine Coleman says:

Do you think Jaime will go back out for the 9th?

      1. Christine Coleman says:

Never mind! Allen Craig in to pinch-hit.

      2. thefakenick says:

i hope not, he started to tire, it’s early in season, and it looks like he’s gonna have to be the workhorse down the stretch, and, hopefully, into the playoffs. if he had a shutout going i might let him start the inning and see, but not now.

  53. lovethemusic says:

Had to leave for a while. Releaved to see everything is still good. You never know

  54. Christine Coleman says:

    That’s a winner!!!

  55. thefakenick says:

alrighty, that’s game, brilliant gem, Jaime

  56. Tara Wellman says:

I hold my breath on balls hit to Colby, but he easily makes the final out and Cards win!

    1. thefakenick says:

it almost looked like he handcuffed himself, whew

      1. Tara Wellman says:

He starts leaning into a catch long before he gets to it and I’m afraid he’s going to dive and whiff! Glad to see he kept running to the ball tonight.

    2. Miranda says:

It’s like someone talked with him about using two hands… except that one-handed catch… well, maybe he didn’t listen! lol

      1. Tara Wellman says:

Nine innings is a long time, especially in center field. Maybe he forgot by the end.

        1. Miranda says:

Plus, he was probably really concentrating on where he needed to be with that arch in center field and all!

          1. Tara Wellman says:

Exactly! It just all came at him at once…we may be lucky he got that one hand up in time!

  57. Christine Coleman says:

Thanks, everyone, for hanging out tonight!

When should we do it again?

    1. Miranda says:

As long as these bring winners, I’m up for whenevs the guests think!

    2. teebob2000 says:

      One question.

What’s with the “booyas” over here??? You people still getting SportCenter reruns from before Stuart Scott’s eye got fucked up?? Let me guess: Garcia’s pitching tonight was as cool as the other side of the pillow, too, right?

      1. Christine Coleman says:

        Now, now …

  58. sloanpeterson2 says:

Okay, so this is the Cardinals fansite. Not what I expected-thought it would be little more erudite and less “booya”. Bye-Bye now….

    1. Christine Coleman says:

Can’t comment on the booya — not me.

However, had Miguel Batista pitched, there would have been poetry.
