It was announced earlier today that Landon Donovan is going to continue playing for LA Galaxy. WOO HOO!!! He signed a multi-year contract and also got a significant raise. This secured the rights to Donovan as a player and means that he’ll be in a Galaxy uniform for a couple more years. In his 13-year MLS career Donovan has 131 goals, this leaves him three goals away from tying the all-time record for goals scored in MLS. Bruce Arena stated, “This signing is instrumental toward our commitment to build a team that can compete for championships year-in and year-out. We look forward to Landon’s continued leadership and excellent play as a member of the LA Galaxy.”
Donovan joked saying his contract was “worth 500 million over 20 years…” but all jokes aside Donovan is excited to stay in LA. “I’m thrilled to continue my career here with the LA Galaxy. This organization has always treated me with the utmost respect and I feel truly blessed that I am able to continue playing here.” Donovan had other interests from around the World but he stated that all other offers paled in comparison to staying in LA. “This to me is more than a contract, it’s personal and emotional… Not many athletes have the opportunity to play in an organization like this. When you have moments like what I’ve had in the past couple of years, you can see that’s it’s all worth it.”
On a personal level I’m thrilled that he is staying. There really wasn’t a doubt in my mind that he wouldn’t be staying, but seeing him excited like this about extending his career in LA is amazing. After he announced his sabbatical at the end of the season last year everyone had their doubts about Landon ever coming back, even Landon was contemplating retirement. Today he put those thoughts out of everyone’s heads. Looking at how this season has gone so far for Landon, I’d say that his career is far from over and I can’t wait to see how he continues to become one of America’s greatest soccer players.
