As this weekend’s round of games start up, let’s take a quick look back at last weekend. The weekend started with just four teams with straight wins, and now there are only two. Barcelona and Atlético Madrid both won their games while Villarreal and Real Madrid drew against each other.
The game between Barcelona and Sevilla was about as dramatic as they come, minus a red card snafu. Dani Alves opened the scoring for Barça towards the end of the first half, but the last four goals of the game came right at the end. Sevilla had a goal disallowed because…well no one’s really sure why. Then Lionel Messi brought Barça two goals clear of Sevilla, but the slightly shaky bleugranas defense allowed Sevilla to equalize in the last 15 minutes of the game. Deep into added time, it looked like this game would end in a 2-2 draw. Then Messi powered through the Sevillan defense with sheer force and magic to set up Alexis for the winning goal! It was an incredible result, and the Sevilla fans were not pleased, to put it lightly.
Athletic Bilbao opened their new stadium this weekend and the fans succeeded in transferring the atmosphere from the old to the new San Mamés. In a thrilling match against Celta Vigo, Athletic presented their fans with a 3-2 win in the new home. Celta made it bloody difficult for the Basque team too! Despite playing 0n a Monday night, Athletic Bilbao fans filled the stadium to celebrate 100 years since the old San Mamés opened in 1913.
Atlético Madrid continue to look fierce and unstoppable so far this season. Their 4-2 win over Almería puts them in first place in the league. Málaga might not be in the Champions League this year, but they steamrolled Rayo Vallecano in a 5-0 win. Poor Rayo are really struggling this season and it hurts to watch. Villarreal are quite clearly thrilled to be back in the top flight of the Spanish League as their fans filled La Madrigal and made it a hellacious 2-2 draw for Real Madrid. It was Gareth Bale’s debut and he saved los blancos from defeat in front of the pack crowd. The Yellow Submarine look strong this season and their prospects are exciting. Here are the full results from the weekend:
Atlético Madrid 4-2 Almería
Levante 0-0 Real Sociedad
Barcelona 3-2 Sevilla
Villarreal 2-2 Real Madrid
Granada 0-1 Espanyol
Getafe 2-1 Osasuna
Málaga 5-0 Rayo Vallecano
Real Betis 3-1 Valencia
Elche 0-0 Valladolid
Athletic Bilbao 3-2 Celta Vigo
In the midweek Champions League fixtures, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid all dominated their games. Sadly Real Sociedad couldn’t pull off a win or a draw at home and lost 2-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk. In the Europa League, Sevilla played brilliantly while Valencia capitulated to Swansea at home. Something’s not clicking in Valencia. They’d allowed six goals in their last two games and only scored once. Losing Roberto Soldado seems to have hurt them more than anticipated!
