What a wild weekend for MLS teams everywhere. Tim Cahill scored a goal in seven seconds, SEVEN SECONDS YOU GUYS! Anyways, y’all came here for LA Galaxy not the rest of the league, so here we go!
This was the third and finally meeting between these two teams and it was a big one. LA could clinch a playoff spot with a win or tie and they could knock San Jose out of the running. Todd Dunivant was out of the 18 with an injury while Gonzalez, Keane and Donovan were all in the starting 11. Last night was a crazy finish, but when is it not when it comes to these two teams?
The first half LA’s defense was all over the board, Penendo had to make several saves to keep San Jose off the board. Most of San Jose’s chance were in the air and luckily didn’t find the back of the net. Keane had a chance around the 33rd minute that flew wide left while Donovan also had a chance that was wide right. San Jose held most of the possession (62%) but both teams went into the half level at 0. For the second half, LA made some tactical changes and moved Zardes up to with Donovan wide left. This opened up more space for Zardes and gave Donovan the chance to get in several crosses.
In the 68th minute something surmising happened… Robbie Rogers made his debut after not playing for a couple of months, it was a surprising substitution. (He kind of disappeared and to be honest I think he only got one touch on the ball.) Not much happened until the final 15 minutes and it was a wild one. San Jose was getting shot after shot but somehow LA kept stopping them from finding the back of the net. Donovan and Keane found themselves in a 2 v 1 predicament until Donovan misfired his pass to Keane and San Jose’s defense took over the ball. It was a golden opportunity for LA to take the lead but i don’t even know what Donovan was trying to do with his pass, but it wasn’t pretty.
As the 90 was up three minutes stoppage time was added, and I was trying to breathe because it was stressful y’all! In the final seconds of stoppage time Zardes was taken down in the box which looked like a PK from my point of view but apparently it wasn’t. Alas the final whistle blew and LA had clinched a playoff spot while killing San Jose’s playoff hopes.
LA’s next game will be against Seattle on October 27th. (Juninho will miss this game due to yellow card accumulation)
