Derek Boogaard Found Dead At Age 28

Derek Boogaard, the New York Rangers forward who made a name for himself as a fighter and enforcer, was found dead in his apartment, as first reported by Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune via his Twitter account. He was 28 years old. There is no known cause of death at this time.

The New York Rangers issued a press release confirming his death, which includes this quote from Glen Sather, the President and General Manager:

“Derek was an extremely kind and caring individual. … He was a very thoughtful person, who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.  We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”

We here at Aerys Sports would also like to send our condolences to his families — both biological and hockey. As much as he was known for his pugilistic ways on the ice, he was also known as a gem of a guy off of it. May he rest in peace.
