Jeremy Hellickson’s Hell: Rays starter optioned to Class A

A day after he lasted less than three innings in an 11-1 loss to the Royals, Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson was optioned to Class A Charlotte. It’s not likely that Hellickson will pitch for the Stone Crabs. The news was first reported by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times on Twitter. Manager Joe Maddon said of Hellickson:

¬†“He’s well physically; we just thought giving him a little bit of a break would be very important right now.”

Remember that time Hellickson won AL Rookie of the Year? Yeah, let’s hope the 2011 version of the righty returns from Charlotte in September.

Southpaw Jeff Beliveau was recalled from Triple-A Durham.
