Another Jazzercise review! I enjoyed Burlesque by Jazzercise so much, I decided to try the Jazzercise Latin dance DVD.
Jazzercise: Latin Live is a 50-minute cardio dance workout and includes a warm-up and cooldown. There are two additional pre-programmed, condensed workout options of 12 and 20 minutes, respectively.
The workout is meant to resemble a live class. The instructors are on a stage surrounded by dancers. There is live percussion by Jorge Bermudez. Yet, it doesn’t quite seem ‘live.’ There is obvious editing and splicing of segments. The workout segments end and the instructors switch while the camera is off.
Judi Sheppard Missett (founder and CEO of Jazzercise) and Cheryl Burke (two-time Dancing with the Stars champion) alternate leading the ‘class.’ Their styles are very different. Missett is engaging and talkative, but her form is stiff. Missett focuses on moves like chassés and skips.
Burke’s form is better and her instruction is more straight forward. That must be the ballroom dance training. Burke introduces Latin dances, such as the cha cha, rhumba, and the jive. She spices up the workout with shimmies and lots of hip movement.
The choreography is uncomplicated and get easier with practice. Some moves are high impact (i.e. jumps during the jive), but overall the exertion level is low.
This DVD lacks long-term likability for me because it would get repetitive after the routines are learned, but I enjoyed it.
One big question I have after watching this workout–how does Burke not fall out of her top?
Lots of tape, I’m guessing.
