A lot of times, the best tweets are random one-liners from our favorite players. Sometimes though, we get even better tweets when the players respond to something they see. Today, two of our tweets fall in that category.
First up, we have Alex Ovechkin who has been spending his offseason rooting for his girl over in Europe. During practice one day, he decided to play referee and, well the picture below says it all:

The font matters not, it’s all about the CAPSICLES!
It was on March 9th that my world came to a crashing halt. As I readied myself for the games that evening, the Washington Capitals sent out a pre-game tweet with an alarming message: #CapsIsles.
#CapsIsles?! Capsules? Wait… did you mean Capsicles? Like Popsicles? Tasty treats like corn dogs that are perfect because you can eat them from a stick? Riiiiight. You can’t fool us, you’ve seen The Avengers one too many times, and just what are you implying regarding your Captain?
The Capsicles’ evil plan worked and they gained a follower, someone who celebrates every pre-game when another photograph with a creative take on the English language is fired out to fans and admirers. That follower may have even backtracked to “investigate” the trend and locker room pics further. I give to you The Best of The Capsicles, Part One.

Tomas Kundratek and Steve Olesky are proud puck bearers and public enemy number one.
When you see a player smiling ear-to-ear and proudly holding up a puck for all to see, does it matter what team he’s on? There’s a lot more going on than just another snazzy photo op. From personal achievement and overcoming obstacles to a supportive family and hockey community to maybe a little luck on the ice and sometimes a little bit of sass in his smile, we should just be pleased for him that he’s having success as he launches into his NHL career, right? Maybe.
Let’s be real. At the end of the day, did he assist on or score the goal that helped his team clinch the OT win against your team? Yes? Then it does matter. It matters a lot.
I’m looking at you, Tomas Kundratek.

Who is the coolest uncle ever? (Photo by Bridget Samuels/ Flickr)
Every day when our teams hit the ice, we sit down with our families and think of the players participating in the game. And just the players. That’s how it should be but what we tend to forget is these guys are human as well and therefore have families of their own that they think of every day before hitting the ice.

He da man.
After a few months of stacking small piles of hockey cards all over my apartment, I finally had the chance to spend some time to properly organizing overthinking my card binder. Rather than coming up with a specific plan or actually putting any cards into the binder, I decided to look at Marty Turco cards on eBay because TurcoMania still runs wild in my heart.
It was then that I stumbled upon the “You Da Man” Marty Turco card pictured above. I had somehow forgotten about the 60 card Sidelines subset that made its appearance in the 2009-10 Upper Deck Be a Player Signature Series set. When the set was released, Sidelines cards weren’t anything new for hockey card fans or collectors with or without a sense of humour.
The 1992-93 Pinnacle Sidelines Subset (which I will get to at some point) was very informative. How would I have ever known that Luke Richardson was a rocket builder? And other cards popped up here and there with news about what players were doing off the ice, many of them related to the sport of golf.
Let’s relax, unwind and take some time to enjoy a few of the anecdotes and guffaw inducing moments brought to you by a handful of the 2009-10 UD BAP Sidelines cards.

There’s a lot of Eric Lindros hockey cards that make you scratch your head. It’s easy to forget that he was kind of a big deal before suffering so many concussions. Whether it was that star power or just a fluke of the 1990s, we’re definitely glad for it.
Happy Wednesday!

It’s a beautiful thing when inspiration strikes. One minute you’re wandering around the internet looking for ridiculous hockey cards. The next a thought drifts through your mind: “I could do a whole edition just with Jaromir Jagr”. Yes, Jagr. He of one of the most preposterous mullets in NHL history.
This isn’t Mr. Jagr’s first visit to our Wednesday traditions, but this is a much more in depth exploration of his cardboard history. Pull up a chair and enjoy.

Jim Carey’s hockey card is trippy. No, not that Jim Carrey. Jim Carey the goaltender who had a 5 year NHL career with the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, and St. Louis Blues.
Either the card makers were enjoying some mood altering substances when designing this one or we are witnessing Carey’s spirit float up out of his body mid game. Just don’t look at it too long or…

This is Capitals defenseman Mike Green’s rookie card. Yup, it looks like he is about to have a certain kind of “movement” on the ice. Possibly on his way to the face off circle. Yes, we have the maturity if 12 year olds and poop jokes make us laugh.
You may not want to keep going if you aren’t laughing too.

September 11th is a hard day for many American’s who remember the devastating day from 2001. It has been 11 years but the memory is engraved for life. A few Ducks took to their twitter accounts to express their thoughts and share their sympathies with the rest of us who are feeling the same way they feel.

I spent most of my day figuring out how to relate an article about 9/11 with the sport of hockey. The answer was always right in front of my nose, considering I spent a lot of my spare time browsing my twitter feed. Before I knew it there was my complete article sprawled out over various tweets just waiting to be pieced together.

While vital “Ducklings” were posting their thoughts & prayers for everyone to see there was another story being remembered. The story of Coach Boudreau. The Washington Times released a story last year about how our own (then with the Washington Capitals) Bruce Boudreau had a narrow escape from being a 9/11 casualty. [Note: Not so lucky were Boudreau's co-workers Garnet "Ace" Bailey & Mark Bavis. Their story can be read about right here!] Boudreau was scheduled to be on United Flight 175, the plane that crashed into the South tower of the World Trade Center. A twist of fate had Boudreau flying out to L.A. a day earlier. A last minute “Coaches Dinner” that (then) L.A. Kings coach Andy Murray had organized was all it took to be Boudreau’s saving grace. You can read more about Bruce’s story by clicking the link above to the Washington Times.
I’d like to bring this to an end in the only fitting way I see possible. Seeing as how I write from Anaheim, the hometown of Disneyland, I’d like to point out that it really is a small world, after all. For Bruce Boudreau, it’s a lucky one too. Rest in Peace to all the victims of 9/11/01. Eternal Thank You’s to the troops who have fought and continue to fight for America. God Bless the troops who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. To the families and friends, to the American’s– One Love.
